Held envelopes against the light like someone in a cheap detective show.<\/p>\n

I asked my mother.<\/p>\n

My sister.<\/p>\n

I even called an old friend and joked, \u201cIf you\u2019re the weirdo mailing my kid birthday money, just tell me so I can stop wondering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody knew anything.<\/p>\n

Or nobody admitted it.<\/p>\n

It felt like a hand resting at the edge of our lives.<\/p>\n

When Adrian turned thirteen, he opened that year\u2019s envelope at the kitchen table while I made pancakes.<\/p>\n

He pulled out the card, looked inside, then narrowed his eyes at me.<\/p>\n

Adrian\u2019s father was not some tragic lost love.<\/p>\n

He was not a man separated from us by circumstances.<\/p>\n

He was someone who disappeared the moment responsibility stopped being convenient.<\/p>\n

He never met Adrian.<\/p>\n

Never sent a present.<\/p>\n

Never asked for a photograph.<\/p>\n

Some years, I was not even sure he remembered I existed, much less that he had a son.<\/p>\n
