Mom ordered me to rehire the vendors.<\/p>\n

I told her the caterer had already accepted another booking and the band had returned my deposit after finding a replacement event.<\/p>\n

Even if every vendor remained available, I would not pay.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have always been jealous of your brother,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The accusation was so familiar that it no longer wounded me.<\/p>\n

Marcus had always been the charming child, the athlete, the son who received help without anyone expecting repayment.<\/p>\n

I was the dependable daughter\u2014the one who solved emergencies, remembered birthdays, paid overdue bills, and was told that doing so proved I had \u201ca good heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

But having a good heart did not make me an unlimited credit card.<\/p>\n

Ethan walked downstairs and froze when he noticed her.<\/p>\n

I immediately stepped between them.<\/p>\n

She blinked.<\/p>\n

I had never spoken those words to her before.<\/p>\n

For several seconds, neither of us moved.<\/p>\n

Then she snatched up her purse and stormed outside, slamming the door with enough force to shake the framed photographs on the wall.<\/p>\n

Ethan stared at the floor. \u201cDid I ruin Noah\u2019s party?\u201d<\/p>\n

I knelt in front of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Adults made promises they couldn\u2019t keep. That is not your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded, but I could see he did not completely believe me.<\/p>\n

The next morning, Jenna sent me a private message.<\/p>\n

Unlike Marcus, she did not attack me. She wrote that she understood why I was angry, but Noah had overheard the argument and now believed Ethan hated him.<\/p>\n

I called her immediately.<\/p>\n
