\u201cI did not care for my grandchildren because I wanted payment,\u201d I said. \u201cI did it because that is what family does. The difference between us is that I understand the difference between keeping score and keeping a family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa stared at the paper without answering.<\/p>\n

Moments later, Jason\u2019s truck entered the driveway. Emma and Thomas rushed outside, and their father\u2019s voice softened as they greeted him.<\/p>\n

Jason came into the kitchen, saw both invoices, and then looked through the back door at the deck.<\/p>\n

Relief crossed his face when he saw his uncle working.<\/p>\n

Emma wrapped her arms around my leg.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you stay one more day, Grandma?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked toward Melissa.<\/p>\n

Her expression was no longer smug or defensive. Something more honest had replaced it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could stay,\u201d she said quietly.<\/p>\n

I explained that Robert had driven four hours to help and that my garden needed attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I will visit again,\u201d I said, \u201cwhen Jason invites me.\u201d<\/p>\n

My son understood.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are always welcome, Mom,\u201d he said. \u201cI should have made that clear before.\u201d<\/p>\n

I kissed both grandchildren goodbye.<\/p>\n

At the door, Melissa returned three jars of jam.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey belong to you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I left one for Thomas and took the others home.<\/p>\n

That evening, Jason called. He apologized for not understanding what had happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did not know,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI should have known.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I replied. \u201cPay closer attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

He promised he would.<\/p>\n

Three weeks later, Jason told me Melissa had accepted a part-time job. They had arranged dependable childcare and created a routine that gave the children more consistency.<\/p>\n

In November, the four of them visited my home for a weekend. Emma and Thomas slept beneath their quilts. We made strawberry jam from the last fruit in my garden, sat beside the fire in the evenings, and drank coffee in the mornings.<\/p>\n

Melissa helped with the jam. Her second jar did not seal properly, so I showed her how to fix it without embarrassing her. She completed the third jar by herself.<\/p>\n
