My ninety-two-year-old grandfather, Jeremy, taught me that football began long before kickoff.<\/p>\n

Every Saturday, he opened the curtains, wrapped the same faded blue scarf around his neck, and claimed the worn recliner beside the television. Nobody else could sit there because, according to Grandpa, the team depended on our routine.<\/p>\n

My grandmother June used to tease him about the scarf. She died twelve years earlier, but he still kept her photograph in his wallet and left the chair beside him empty.<\/p>\n

That spring, Grandpa\u2019s doctor warned me not to postpone anything important. His heart was weaker, and walking had become difficult.<\/p>\n

When the biggest match in years was announced, I spent most of my savings on two premium accessible seats near the field.<\/p>\n

Grandpa cried when he saw the tickets.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be saving for your future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His son, Brandon, went pale.<\/p>\n

I called for a steward, but Grandpa touched my wrist.<\/p>\n

The stranger sat in Grandpa\u2019s seat. His wife followed, avoiding my eyes. Brandon remained standing.<\/p>\n

I helped Grandpa turn toward the aisle. The excitement had vanished from his face, and that hurt more than losing the seats.<\/p>\n

Before we reached the end of the row, Brandon called after us.<\/p>\n

He opened a faded blue backpack and removed an old captain\u2019s armband. The cloth was nearly gray, with an old club crest stitched across it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt belonged to my grandfather,\u201d Brandon explained. \u201cHe wore it to every match.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he looked at his father.<\/p>\n
