PART 2: THE BOY WHO STOOD UP<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Brandon\u2019s father ordered him to sit down, but the boy refused.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said this gentleman wouldn\u2019t remember today,\u201d Brandon said. \u201cI think Grandpa would be ashamed of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody laughed or applauded. The silence was heavier than shouting.<\/p>\n

Brandon turned back to Jeremy and offered him the armband.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad doesn\u2019t deserve this anymore. I think you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grandpa studied the boy for a long moment. Then he gently folded Brandon\u2019s fingers around the faded cloth.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your grandfather wore this to every match, it belongs with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon shook his head, but Grandpa would not take it.<\/p>\n

A woman behind us stood and demanded he return the seat. Another supporter joined her, followed by someone across the aisle.<\/p>\n

The stranger finally stepped away. His wife moved with him without speaking.<\/p>\n

Yet Grandpa did not immediately sit down.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe match is beginning,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t want anyone to miss it because of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon climbed onto the concrete step and raised the armband.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis gentleman waited his entire life for a match like this,\u201d he announced. \u201cIf you think he deserves a better view, please stand.\u201d<\/p>\n

For one second, nothing happened.<\/p>\n

Then one person rose.<\/p>\n

Another followed.<\/p>\n

Within moments, nearly the entire section was standing.<\/p>\n

A steward arrived expecting trouble, only to find several strangers offering Grandpa their places. A couple near the front moved, and the steward arranged even better seats for us both.<\/p>\n

Grandpa sat between Brandon and me.<\/p>\n

The entitled man and his wife returned to their original row. No one removed them. Their consequence was having to watch the crowd choose the person they had dismissed.<\/p>\n

When the whistle blew, Grandpa leaned forward like a much younger man. Brandon smiled whenever he commented on the formation, saying he sounded exactly like his own grandfather.<\/p>\n

By halftime, they were debating tactics as though they had known each other for years.<\/p>\n

Brandon\u2019s father watched from above. His anger was gone. What remained was the slow realization that his son seemed happier beside Grandpa than he had beside him.<\/p>\n

During the break, he came down and asked Brandon whether he could wear the old armband during the second half.<\/p>\n

Brandon considered him carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot today, Dad. You haven\u2019t earned it yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The answer visibly hurt, but for once, the man did not argue.<\/p>\n

Grandpa leaned toward Brandon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat took courage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt awful,\u201d the boy admitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost courage does, son.\u201d<\/p>\n
