A woman\u2019s young son accidentally revealed that a mysterious woman had been visiting their upstairs room while she was at work. Certain her husband was hiding an af:fair, she began searching for the truth. What she discovered was nothing like she expected.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The house was silent as I stood at the foot of our bed, folding a stack of Leo\u2019s tiny T-shirts. On the dresser, my mother\u2019s silk scarf rested in a loose coil, still carrying the faint scent of her jasmine perfume three months after we buried her.<\/p>\n

Before I could stop myself, I lifted it to my face and breathed in.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy, are you crying again?\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo stood in the doorway wearing mismatched socks, one blue and one striped, holding a juice box like a prize.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, baby. Just smelling Grandma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandma smells like flowers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe does.\u201d<\/p>\n

He padded into the room and climbed onto the bed. That was when I noticed it again\u2014a smear of silver paint along the side of his thumb, dried and peeling, with another streak crusted near his elbow that I was certain had not been there when I bathed him the night before.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeo, what is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPaint.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can see it\u2019s paint. From where?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cArt class,\u201d Mark called from the hallway.<\/p>\n

He appeared behind Leo with a cup of coffee in one hand and his phone in the other.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe teacher\u2019s been doing a whole galaxy unit this week. Stars, planets, the works.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he gave me that smile.<\/p>\n

Small and private, with the corners of his mouth tucked inward as though he were keeping something from slipping out.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks stubborn. Doesn\u2019t it wash off?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know how he is in the tub. Splashes everywhere except on himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did!\u201d Leo shouted before bouncing off the bed and racing downstairs.<\/p>\n

Mark leaned over and kissed my forehead, quick and warm.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look tired, Ket.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur anniversary is in three days. Ten years. Are we doing something or are you going to keep pretending you forgot?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n

He checked his phone again, wearing that same soft smile, then slipped it into his back pocket before I could glimpse the screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to run out for an hour,\u201d he said. \u201cErrand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOn a Wednesday morning? Don\u2019t you have work?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBoring one. Promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

I watched him leave and told myself I was being absurd.<\/p>\n

Grief did strange things to people. My mother used to say suspicion was simply love with nowhere to land, and lately my love seemed to have nowhere at all.<\/p>\n
