PART 2: THE MAN AT THE HOTEL<\/strong><\/h1>\n

On our final morning, Lily slept upstairs while Tony loaded the rental car. At the front desk, the manager, Denise, handed me a sealed envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought your husband had already told you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTold me what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA man named Robert paid for two of your arrangements. He arrived this morning and is waiting on the patio.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through the glass doors, I saw an older man holding our castle photograph.<\/p>\n

Robert was Adam\u2019s father.<\/p>\n

After Adam\u2019s funeral, Robert and I exchanged bitter letters. He accused me of keeping his granddaughter away; I accused him of disappearing when we needed him. He blamed grief, but I saw excuses. Eventually, the letters stopped.<\/p>\n

I believed Robert wanted nothing to do with Lily; he believed I had shut him out.<\/p>\n

I confronted Tony beside the car.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou invited Robert here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout telling me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tony had found Robert\u2019s final letter while searching for Lily\u2019s birth certificate. It said we should call whenever Lily was ready.<\/p>\n

Tony contacted him, and Robert arranged the character breakfast and beach equipment through the hotel.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou brought him into our daughter\u2019s final trip without asking me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know whether he was sincere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why invite him?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tony\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause Lily is running out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert had wanted to come earlier, but Tony refused. No meeting would happen unless Lily and I agreed. He arrived only to ask before the chance disappeared forever.<\/p>\n

\u201cI kept waiting for the perfect moment to tell you,\u201d Tony said. \u201cThen I realized we might not have another one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou had no right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFinding him may have come from love, but bringing him here was not your decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could answer, Lily\u2019s voice came from behind us.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you whispering?\u201d<\/p>\n

She sat near the entrance in a wheelchair and pajamas after waking alone and calling reception.<\/p>\n

I was furious with Tony, but the decision was no longer ours.<\/p>\n

It belonged to Lily.<\/p>\n
