PART 3: EVERYONE WHO CAME FOR HER<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Upstairs, we explained that Adam\u2019s father was waiting below.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cYour biological grandfather,\u201d I said. \u201cHis name is Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside the envelope was an old photograph of Robert standing beside ten-year-old Adam. Lily touched her father\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has my eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes Robert want to meet me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want me to meet him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want you to choose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily turned to Tony.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you bring him here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tony nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI should have told your mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs he nice?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think so,\u201d Tony said. \u201cBut you don\u2019t owe him anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily looked at the photograph again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to see him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert entered carrying only a small wooden music box.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis belonged to your father,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A gentle tune played when Lily opened it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was Dad like when he was ten?\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert smiled through tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe loved pancakes, hated tying his shoes, and once tried to keep a frog in the bathtub.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour grandmother screamed. The frog escaped and ended up in her laundry basket.\u201d<\/p>\n

That ordinary story meant more than any grand apology.<\/p>\n

Then Lily asked to return to the ocean.<\/p>\n

After Dr. Patel confirmed Lily was stable enough for one more day, Robert changed our flights and extended the hotel stay.<\/p>\n

At the beach, Robert walked on one side of Lily\u2019s chair while Tony walked on the other. Together, they rolled her toward the water.<\/p>\n

A small wave finally reached her feet.<\/p>\n

Lily gasped, then laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s cold!\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert laughed with her. Tony crouched beside the chair and wiped his eyes.<\/p>\n

Later, while Lily rested beneath an umbrella, I spoke to Robert.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day doesn\u2019t repair the years we lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m still angry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Lily deserves to know about Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI would be grateful for the chance to tell her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tony and I would deal with his decision later. He had crossed a boundary, and forgiveness would take time.<\/p>\n

That day, however, belonged to Lily.<\/p>\n

Before sunset, she asked a hotel employee to take one final photograph. We gathered awkwardly behind her wheelchair.<\/p>\n

She pointed toward Tony, Robert, and me.<\/p>\n

\u201cStand together.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy all of us?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Lily smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I want everyone who came for me in the same picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

The employee raised the camera. Tony stood beside the daughter he had chosen, Robert beside the granddaughter he had nearly lost, and I between my new family and an unhealed past.<\/p>\n

In front of us, Lily smiled as the sunset reflected across the ocean.<\/p>\n
