PART 3: THE WOMAN I HAD NEVER TRULY LOST<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The rest of the weekend became unexpectedly meaningful.<\/p>\n

Philippe began asking about Lyon with genuine interest. It turned out he had completed part of his engineering training there during the same years I lived in the city.<\/p>\n

That evening, we stayed awake until two in the morning, arguing in French over old restaurants and drawing a map on a napkin.<\/p>\n

Claire later told me she stood on the stairs and cried because she had never seen that version of me.<\/p>\n

H\u00e9l\u00e8ne and I did not become friends immediately.<\/p>\n

But on the final morning, she joined me on the deck.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to know the woman who lived alone in Lyon at twenty-two,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t believe Claire knows her. I\u2019m not certain you know her anymore either.\u201d<\/p>\n

Philippe provided the wine. H\u00e9l\u00e8ne helped me choose my dress through several video calls, gently correcting my French like someone who had decided to care about me.<\/p>\n

During the reception, Philippe gave part of his toast in French.<\/p>\n

Then he laughed and said, \u201cI will translate for the other American guests, but not for Margaret. I learned over a very good beef bourguignon that she understands every word.\u201d<\/p>\n

For thirty-one years, I had become a woman who kept her eyes on her plate. I heard cruel remarks and allowed them to pass. I entered every room carrying gifts so no one would question whether I deserved to be there.<\/p>\n

My former husband had taught me, slowly and quietly, that silence was the safest version of myself.<\/p>\n

Eventually, I mistook that lesson for my personality.<\/p>\n

But French belonged to a time before my marriage.<\/p>\n
