Three days later, I stood at the edge of the same beach. The changing cubicles were still there. My chest tightened, and every part of me wanted to turn around.<\/p>\n

Emily took my left hand.<\/p>\n

Grace held my right.<\/p>\n

Together, we walked across the sand.<\/p>\n

Near the dunes, Chris and Andrea were waiting.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou brought reinforcements?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn case you tried to run,\u201d Emily said.<\/p>\n

Grace squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey witnessed you choosing us before we were old enough to choose you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris hugged me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI brought you here eighteen years ago because I thought the ocean might keep you alive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt did.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked toward Emily and Grace.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Trent. You did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrea handed me an old note she had written after one of my early visits with the babies. At first, she had worried I was too broken to raise them. Then she watched me sit beside two newborns and speak to them as though they already mattered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did matter,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is why I believed you could become their father.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two beach chairs waited nearby. The white towel had been placed across one of them. Emily set Sarah\u2019s photograph on the towel, and Grace placed a card bearing Ivy\u2019s name beside it.<\/p>\n

Then my daughters stood on either side of me.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell us about them,\u201d Emily said.<\/p>\n

For the first time, I did. I told them Sarah sang badly, hated folding laundry, and loved vegetables I could barely tolerate.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Ivy?\u201d Grace asked.<\/p>\n

I breathed through the pain.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never got to hold her, but she was stubborn. She kicked whenever Sarah tried to sleep\u2014and somehow kicked harder every time I burned dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emily laughed through her tears.<\/p>\n

Loving the daughters standing beside me did not reduce the love I still carried for the daughter I had lost.<\/p>\n
