Only three hours earlier, Noah had been attending his cousin Mason\u2019s birthday dinner at my in-laws\u2019 home. Daniel, my husband, was away on business, so I had left Noah with his grandparents without hesitation. Arthur and Margaret Whitaker lived in a sprawling stone house with a heated driveway, overflowing cupboards, and opinions that could wound as deeply as knives.<\/p>\n

Noah was only nine\u2014small, quiet, and endlessly kind. He apologized when someone else bumped into him.<\/p>\n

Mason, who was twelve, had never hidden his dislike for him.<\/p>\n

By the time I reached the hospital, heavy snow lashed against the windows until the emergency entrance looked blurred beneath waves of white. Still wearing my scrubs, I rushed inside, my ID badge bouncing against my chest.<\/p>\n

I lowered my forehead onto his hand, tears slipping across my lips.<\/p>\n

Then the treatment room door swung open.<\/p>\n

Arthur Whitaker entered in a wool coat dusted with snow. His silver hair was perfectly combed, and irritation still lingered on his face\u2014until he noticed me sitting beside Noah.<\/p>\n

He stopped cold.<\/p>\n

I rose slowly.<\/p>\n
