Kyle pushed an invoice across the counter and tapped the number with his pen.<\/p>\n

Helen stared at the bill.<\/p>\n

Behind the glass window, her car sat in the service bay with the hood open. But something bothered her.<\/p>\n

She had never heard the engine running.<\/p>\n

Kyle smiled with fake sympathy.<\/p>\n

His expression tightened.<\/p>\n

Helen nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen show me the readings.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, Kyle looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were all under ninety.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery cylinder?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pushed the invoice closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, will that be one card or two?\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen opened her purse.<\/p>\n

Kyle smiled.<\/p>\n

He thought he had already won.<\/p>\n

He had no idea the conversation was only beginning.<\/p>\n

Earlier that morning, Helen\u2019s granddaughter Sophie had warned her.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandma, your car made that weird sound again yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cCars complain sometimes, honey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophie smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom said she can take you to the repair shop.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mother worries too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe loves you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those words softened Helen.<\/p>\n

She remembered her late husband Nathaniel, who had passed away eleven years earlier.<\/p>\n

Nathaniel never treated her like someone helpless. He always told her:<\/p>\n

\u201cAsk for company because you want someone beside you, not because you think you can\u2019t stand alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen carried that lesson with her every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why was it shaking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause apparently the coil decided today was the perfect day to fail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madison sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m worried.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can come.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t need to rescue me.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, Mom. I just like showing up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I\u2019ll call you after I know what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

After dropping Sophie off, the car suddenly started shaking at a traffic light.<\/p>\n

The engine rattled violently.<\/p>\n

Helen immediately understood.<\/p>\n

The ignition coil had finally failed.<\/p>\n

Three days earlier, Rebecca, the shop\u2019s owner and senior mechanic, had personally inspected her vehicle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe engine is healthy,\u201d Rebecca had said. \u201cOnly one coil is weakening.\u201d<\/p>\n
