\u201cA mechanic here told me the ignition coil was failing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019ll be the judge of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He took her keys.<\/p>\n

Helen noticed Rebecca sitting in the waiting area, quietly reading a magazine.<\/p>\n

She recognized her immediately.<\/p>\n

Rebecca gave her a small nod.<\/p>\n

Helen decided to wait.<\/p>\n

She wanted to see what Kyle would do when he thought nobody important was watching.<\/p>\n

Less than twenty minutes later, Kyle returned.<\/p>\n

\u201cName one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCompression.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I see the results?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t usually show customers raw data.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen give me my keys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle placed his hand over them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t recommend driving this car.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen looked at his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can advise me. You cannot keep my property.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle looked around.<\/p>\n

Several customers were now listening.<\/p>\n

Kyle became defensive.<\/p>\n

The room went silent.<\/p>\n

Helen stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know anything about my finances.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was only trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You decided I was old enough to ignore and scared enough to obey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle quickly printed the invoice.<\/p>\n

There it was.<\/p>\n

A replacement engine.<\/p>\n

Eight thousand dollars.<\/p>\n

Kyle looked directly at her.<\/p>\n

That was when Helen stopped giving him chances.<\/p>\n

She reached into her floral purse.<\/p>\n

Past her wallet.<\/p>\n

Past Nathaniel\u2019s old tape measure.<\/p>\n

And pulled out a folded report.<\/p>\n

She placed it on the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cRead the date.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle looked down.<\/p>\n

Three days earlier.<\/p>\n

Then he saw the results.<\/p>\n

All four cylinders were normal.<\/p>\n

At the bottom was Rebecca\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n

His face changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis says the engine passed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThree days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle looked nervous.<\/p>\n

\u201cEngines can change quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom healthy to completely destroyed in seventy-two hours?\u201d<\/p>\n

He had no answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cShow me the damaged part.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t opened the engine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShow me today\u2019s test results.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe machine didn\u2019t save them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen placed the report beside his invoice.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me my engine was destroyed. But you have no damaged parts, no results, and no proof.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle reached for the invoice.<\/p>\n
