Nine came from Patricia.<\/p>\n

Six were from Scott.<\/p>\n

Two came from Scott\u2019s wife, Melissa, who had not contacted Lily for almost a year.<\/p>\n

Daniel silenced his phone and placed it face down on the windowsill.<\/p>\n

Lily had fallen asleep again.<\/p>\n

Her breathing remained shallow but steady, while the monitor beside her bed continued its quiet, regular rhythm.<\/p>\n

Daniel sat holding her hand as reporters gathered outside the hospital entrance.<\/p>\n

At 10:26, a nurse entered.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Mercer, your mother and brother are downstairs,\u201d she said. \u201cSecurity stopped them because you requested no visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel looked toward the doorway.<\/p>\n

The nurse hesitated.<\/p>\n

Daniel nearly laughed.<\/p>\n

Patricia had attended only two of Lily\u2019s birthdays in seventeen years.<\/p>\n

She had missed school plays, basketball games, Christmas dinners, and the funeral of Daniel\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n

When Lily was ten, she once asked why Grandma lived thirty minutes away but never visited.<\/p>\n

Daniel had no answer then.<\/p>\n

He had one now.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t raise her,\u201d he said. \u201cShe barely knows her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Downstairs, Patricia stood before several television cameras wearing the blue coat she usually reserved for church.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy granddaughter has always been extraordinary,\u201d she told a reporter. \u201cOur family is extremely close.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott stood beside her and nodded gravely.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe gets her courage from us,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Neither mentioned what they had written only hours earlier.<\/p>\n

Their performance might have succeeded if Melissa had not appeared.<\/p>\n

She pushed through the crowd, breathless and furious.<\/p>\n

Melissa stared directly at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said Lily was not your problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence fell instantly.<\/p>\n

A reporter raised her microphone.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Mercer, did you send that message while your granddaughter was in emergency surgery?\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia opened her mouth.<\/p>\n

Nothing came out.<\/p>\n

Upstairs, Daniel watched the live coverage without expression.<\/p>\n

At 10:41, Senator Rebecca Chase arrived through a restricted entrance.<\/p>\n

She wore no makeup, and her eyes were swollen from crying.<\/p>\n

Owen walked beside her carrying a folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n

He had suffered mild smoke inhalation and wore a bandage above his eyebrow.<\/p>\n

When he entered Lily\u2019s room, he became very quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s her,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

Senator Chase embraced Daniel.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour daughter went back for my son,\u201d she said. \u201cThe teachers told her to stay outside, but she heard him crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel looked at Lily\u2019s pale face.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has always been stubborn.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen tonight, stubbornness saved eleven families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Owen placed the folded paper on Lily\u2019s blanket.<\/p>\n

It was a drawing of Lily wearing a red cape and carrying children away from a burning school.<\/p>\n

Daniel swallowed hard.<\/p>\n

Outside the room, Patricia began shouting that she had a legal right to see her granddaughter.<\/p>\n

Scott demanded that security bring Daniel downstairs.<\/p>\n

Their voices echoed through the lobby until a hospital administrator warned that they would be removed.<\/p>\n

At 11:03, Patricia sent Daniel a message.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe made a mistake. Don\u2019t punish us publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott sent another.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe media is twisting everything. Come downstairs and fix this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel read both messages twice.<\/p>\n

Neither contained the words, \u201cWe are sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither asked whether Lily was awake.<\/p>\n

Neither asked whether Daniel needed help.<\/p>\n

They were not concerned about Lily.<\/p>\n

They were concerned about themselves.<\/p>\n

Daniel opened the family group chat.<\/p>\n

Beneath Patricia\u2019s cruel message sat the photograph of Lily unconscious in her hospital bed.<\/p>\n

He typed slowly.<\/p>\n
