I spent $150,000 planning the perfect fifth-anniversary escape for my husband, Marcus.<\/p>\n

The trip was supposed to save our marriage.<\/p>\n

For years, I had told myself that the distance between us came from stress, work and bad timing. I ran Aegis Systems, a cybersecurity company I had built from one small contract into a business protecting banks, hospitals and government networks. My work was demanding, but it paid for nearly every part of our life.<\/p>\n

Marcus, meanwhile, had spent three years developing an app that was always \u201calmost ready.\u201d His investor meetings never produced investments, and his business plans never became a real business.<\/p>\n

Still, I paid for everything.<\/p>\n

His club membership.<\/p>\n

His expensive clothes.<\/p>\n

His personal trainer.<\/p>\n

His golf trips.<\/p>\n

Even the monthly allowance that allowed him to behave as though my success belonged to both of us.<\/p>\n

I believed that keeping him comfortable would keep our marriage peaceful.<\/p>\n

For our anniversary, I cashed in part of my own stock options and arranged a private seaplane, a luxury villa and an entire week on a private island in the Bahamas.<\/p>\n

No distractions.<\/p>\n

Just the two of us.<\/p>\n

But when my chauffeured SUV arrived at the Miami marina, I immediately saw something was wrong.<\/p>\n

A wall of designer luggage stood beside the seaplane ramp.<\/p>\n

Then I saw the people waiting beside it.<\/p>\n

Marcus\u2019s mother, Barbara, was covered in expensive jewellery. His father, Richard, looked irritated by the heat.<\/p>\n

And standing beside my husband with a champagne glass in her hand was Chloe.<\/p>\n

Marcus\u2019s ex-girlfriend.<\/p>\n

The woman whose messages still appeared on his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be so rigid, Eleanor,\u201d she said. \u201cMarcus told me you\u2019re always working anyway. You\u2019ll probably prefer staying inside where it\u2019s quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Marcus, waiting for him to defend me.<\/p>\n

He said nothing.<\/p>\n

Barbara stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be grateful,\u201d she said. \u201cMarcus has put up with your constant absences for years. Besides, the money is his too. You\u2019re married.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Marcus moved closer and lowered his voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s just make the best of it,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re good at organising things. You can handle the cooking and household arrangements while the rest of us enjoy the beach and the boats.\u201d<\/p>\n

He paused before delivering the final insult.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe it will remind you of your place. Try being a wife for once instead of a boss.\u201d<\/p>\n

The entire dock fell silent.<\/p>\n

Even Chloe\u2019s smile faded.<\/p>\n

I expected myself to cry or shout.<\/p>\n

Instead, something inside me became completely still.<\/p>\n

For five years, I had made myself smaller so Marcus could feel important. I had funded his lifestyle, excused his failures and accepted disrespect because confrontation seemed more exhausting than paying another bill.<\/p>\n

Now he had invited his parents and his ex on the anniversary trip I had paid for, then assigned me the role of their unpaid servant.<\/p>\n

So I smiled.<\/p>\n
