I waited beside the open double doors in an ivory wedding gown, clutching my bouquet so firmly the ribbon pressed deep into the flower stems. At the altar stood my fianc\u00e9, Ethan Cole, hands calmly folded. His complexion had lost its color, yet his gaze never left mine.<\/p>\n

For months, my father, Richard Whitmore, had made it clear that Ethan would never deserve me. Ethan worked as a public defender. Dad owned three successful car dealerships and measured a person\u2019s worth by wealth.<\/p>\n

When he refused to escort me to the altar, I convinced myself he would simply sit through the ceremony in silence.<\/p>\n

I was wrong.<\/p>\n

Heads turned throughout the chapel. My mother lowered her eyes to her handbag. My younger brother, Caleb, avoided looking at anyone.<\/p>\n

So I started walking.<\/p>\n

Every footstep echoed more loudly than the piano melody filling the room. My eyes stung, but I refused to lower my head. Ethan shifted forward, ready to meet me halfway, yet I gave the slightest shake of my head. I needed to finish the walk on my own.<\/p>\n

Just as I reached the middle of the aisle, the chapel doors behind me opened once more.<\/p>\n

Thirty unfamiliar people entered together, all dressed in matching gray suits. Men and women. Young adults and seniors. Several wore small silver shield pins on their lapels. Without speaking, they positioned themselves on both sides of the aisle, leaving a clear path between them.<\/p>\n

The pianist stopped playing.<\/p>\n

One man, a tall Black gentleman in his fifties with a neatly trimmed beard and calm, unwavering eyes, approached my father\u2019s row. Looking directly at him, he said, \u201cSir\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad jumped to his feet, his face flushed. \u201cWho the hell are you people?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man calmly removed his glasses.<\/p>\n

Ethan went completely still.<\/p>\n

A knot formed in my throat.<\/p>\n

Marcus glanced at Ethan before returning his attention to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour fianc\u00e9 saved my son from serving twenty-five years for a crime he did not commit. Every person standing here is connected to someone Ethan Cole defended when no one else would listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

A woman standing nearby broke into tears.<\/p>\n

Marcus faced my father once again.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou called him a nobody. Sir, half this room is here because that \u2018nobody\u2019 gave our families their names back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s lips parted, yet no words followed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd there is one more thing. Mr. Whitmore, before this ceremony continues, you should know your daughter\u2019s fianc\u00e9 also uncovered evidence tied to your company\u2019s charity fund. The state attorney general\u2019s office is outside.\u201d<\/p>\n

My bouquet slipped lower in my trembling hands.<\/p>\n

Ethan spoke so quietly only I could hear him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaya, I was going to tell you tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chapel doors opened again.<\/p>\n
