A week after the funeral, Pete called again.<\/p>\n

The following afternoon, we drove to his house.<\/p>\n

He had not returned yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to meet with the solicitor,\u201d he explained over the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe key\u2019s under the flowerpot.\u201d<\/p>\n

We let ourselves inside.<\/p>\n

I began collecting a few keepsakes for George.<\/p>\n

Then he suddenly stopped in the hallway.<\/p>\n

George\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

Without speaking, he walked inside.<\/p>\n

Most drawers contained ordinary records.<\/p>\n

Bills.<\/p>\n

Insurance documents.<\/p>\n

Bank statements.<\/p>\n

Then we found a black binder.<\/p>\n

Across its cover, written in marker, was one word.<\/p>\n

George.<\/p>\n

I looked at my husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cShould we?\u201d<\/p>\n

He did not answer.<\/p>\n

He simply opened it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

George said nothing.<\/p>\n

I moved beside him.<\/p>\n

At the top of the first page was a date from eleven years earlier.<\/p>\n

His face became completely pale.<\/p>\n

Then he turned the page.<\/p>\n

It was not a bank record or legal agreement.<\/p>\n

It was a handwritten letter.<\/p>\n

Across the top, in neat handwriting, were the words:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor George. If you\u2019re reading this, then it\u2019s finally time for you to know the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

His hands began trembling as he continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeorge, I know this binder will probably make you angry before it makes sense. I only ask that you read every page before you decide what to think of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEleven years ago, when Nancy became ill, I borrowed money because I truly had no other choice. Every dollar you lent us helped pay for her treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI promised I\u2019d pay you back. I meant it every single time I said those words.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind the letter sat a copy of the first check George had ever written to his brother.<\/p>\n

The amount matched the opening entry in the notebook inside our bedroom drawer.<\/p>\n

Next to it was another column marked Investment Fund Deposit.<\/p>\n

The amount was far smaller.<\/p>\n

Only seventy-five dollars.<\/p>\n

Then fifty.<\/p>\n

Then one hundred twenty.<\/p>\n

I frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

George continued turning pages.<\/p>\n

Beneath each loan were dozens of smaller deposits.<\/p>\n

Sometimes twenty dollars.<\/p>\n

Sometimes three hundred.<\/p>\n

Occasionally months passed without a contribution.<\/p>\n

But the deposits always resumed.<\/p>\n

Every payment had gone into the same long-term investment account.<\/p>\n

Nancy had written comments throughout the margins.<\/p>\n

\u201cSold my old jewellery today. Another $180 into the fund.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSkipped our anniversary trip. George comes first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTax refund arrived. Straight into the investment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally had a better month. We can add a little extra.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the eighth year, the deposits were arriving almost every month.<\/p>\n

Tears stung my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey never stopped,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

George shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

He kept reading.<\/p>\n

The account had been established eleven years earlier.<\/p>\n

Every contribution appeared there.<\/p>\n

Every dividend.<\/p>\n

Every year of growth.<\/p>\n

Attached near the front was a recent valuation.<\/p>\n

One sentence at the bottom had been highlighted in yellow.<\/p>\n

George frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced at the wall calendar.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pete had included one final note.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeorge, yesterday I checked the final valuation. The investment has matured. It is finally worth more than everything I ever borrowed from you, including the interest I calculated myself. That\u2019s why I told you my debt had already been paid in full.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t guessing. I already knew the money was there.\u201d<\/p>\n

For eleven years, we had believed Pete was making no effort.<\/p>\n

The reality was almost impossible to absorb.<\/p>\n

He had been trying every month.<\/p>\n

The front door opened.<\/p>\n

Pete entered carrying a small box.<\/p>\n

When he saw us holding the binder, he stopped.<\/p>\n

George stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were saving all this time?\u201d<\/p>\n

Pete nodded.<\/p>\n
