He wiped his eyes.<\/p>\n

Pete opened the small box.<\/p>\n

Several folders had been arranged neatly inside.<\/p>\n

He removed one and handed it to George.<\/p>\n

George opened it.<\/p>\n

His eyes moved across the document.<\/p>\n

I watched disbelief turn into shock.<\/p>\n

At the bottom was the final account balance.<\/p>\n

It exceeded the total George had recorded in his notebook.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe investment performed better than anyone expected,\u201d Pete explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Nancy deserved the funeral she wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

George slowly closed the folder.<\/p>\n

For several moments, neither brother spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never imagined Nancy would be gone before I got the chance to show you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence settled over the office.<\/p>\n

George looked again at the binder.<\/p>\n

Inside a transparent sleeve was a folded letter addressed to him.<\/p>\n

Nancy\u2019s handwriting was instantly recognizable.<\/p>\n

George unfolded it carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cDear George, if you\u2019ve reached this page, then our plan finally worked. You probably spent years believing we\u2019d forgotten what we owed you. Please don\u2019t be angry. Every deposit we made carried your name with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever we wanted to spend money on ourselves, we asked one question. \u2018Have we done right by George yet?\u2019 We always chose the fund.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know you think you only lent your brother money. What you really gave us was 11 more years together. Thank you. Love always, Nancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the time George finished, tears covered his face.<\/p>\n

I had never seen my husband cry before.<\/p>\n
