I walked down the hallway with my heart pounding.<\/p>\n

When I reached Room 114, I pressed my palm against the door and listened.<\/p>\n

My mother was speaking inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe deserves to know,\u201d she said. \u201cShe\u2019s stronger than you think.\u201d<\/p>\n

Logan answered, his voice tense.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what if this lead fails too? What if we tell her and break her heart for nothing?\u201d<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

They were not speaking like two people having an affair.<\/p>\n

They were talking about me.<\/p>\n

Logan said they had been searching for almost a year and had already reached several dead ends.<\/p>\n

Searching for what?<\/p>\n

I could no longer remain outside.<\/p>\n

I pushed the door open.<\/p>\n

Logan and my mother turned toward me. A third person sat at a table covered with documents.<\/p>\n

There were medical records, photographs, and papers that looked like Noah\u2019s adoption documents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n

Logan jumped to his feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease let me explain.\u201d<\/p>\n

I refused to sit down. I told them Noah had seen them and asked whether they understood what he\u2014and I\u2014had assumed.<\/p>\n

The stranger introduced himself as Mr. Hollis, a private investigator Logan had hired six months earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cInvestigating what?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Logan looked at the medical papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cNoah\u2019s biological family.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words seemed to empty the room of air.<\/p>\n

I saw Noah\u2019s latest test results on the table\u2014the records from the specialist who had assured us that we still had time before making any major decisions.<\/p>\n

Logan admitted the doctor had softened the truth.<\/p>\n

Noah\u2019s condition was more serious than I had been told. A compatible donor from his biological family might offer the best chance of helping him.<\/p>\n

I stared at Logan and my mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou decided I couldn\u2019t handle that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were trying to protect you,\u201d my mother whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy lying to me?\u201d<\/p>\n

They said they wanted to carry the burden until they had something real to report. They did not want to raise my hopes after every failed lead.<\/p>\n

Their explanation did not erase the betrayal.<\/p>\n

For weeks, they had held secret meetings, reviewed Noah\u2019s health, and searched for his biological relatives without including me.<\/p>\n

I told them an affair would almost have been easier than discovering they had hidden the truth about our son\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

Then I sat down and asked Mr. Hollis how long he had been searching.<\/p>\n

He explained that Logan had contacted him after the specialist\u2019s latest call.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what have you found?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Hollis opened the folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cA possible half-sister. She lives in Bakersfield.\u201d<\/p>\n

My chest tightened.<\/p>\n

She did not yet know Noah existed, but the available records suggested she might agree to contact and preliminary testing.<\/p>\n

A sister.<\/p>\n

A real person who might be able to help him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen were you going to tell me?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight,\u201d Logan said. \u201cThat\u2019s why we met here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a motel?\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained that he did not want the meeting at home, where Noah could overhear a frightening or confusing conversation.<\/p>\n

The anger inside me remained, but it began changing into something more focused.<\/p>\n

We no longer had the luxury of wasting time on blame.<\/p>\n
