I called my husband for the fourth time that morning.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cHey,\u201d David answered.<\/p>\n

He sounded as though I had interrupted something.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re releasing me at 10 a.m. Are you picking me up, or should I ask Olivia?\u201d<\/p>\n

Olivia was my older sister.<\/p>\n

\u201cUh, Mom\u2019s here helping with Abbie. I can come,\u201d my husband replied.<\/p>\n

Eleanor\u2019s sharp voice came through the background.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid, tell her about the untidy guest room. Are you listening to me?\u201d<\/p>\n

David was forty-one years old and behaving like a frightened teenager.<\/p>\n

He had clearly panicked and summoned his mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d I said carefully. \u201cThat\u2019s great. Tell her thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSure. Rest up.\u201d<\/p>\n

He ended the call before I could say I loved him.<\/p>\n

A nurse entered with my discharge papers and a wheelchair.<\/p>\n

She carried the exaggerated cheerfulness that seemed professionally required.<\/p>\n

\u201cNervous about going home?\u201d she asked while adjusting the footrest.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy MIL is currently rearranging my house,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

She gave me a sympathetic wince.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly,\u201d I continued, \u201cshe\u2019s scarier than the surgery was. At least the surgery had anesthesia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurse laughed hard enough to snort, then apologized.<\/p>\n

I immediately liked her.<\/p>\n

The journey home became a blur of potholes pressing against my ribs.<\/p>\n

David kept the radio low and answered my questions with as few words as possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow\u2019s Abbie?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBabe, are you okay?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

David glanced toward me before looking back at the road.<\/p>\n

He did not answer.<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

The driveway appeared unchanged.<\/p>\n

The hydrangeas were still struggling bravely beside the porch.<\/p>\n

Abbie rushed through the front door in purple leggings, then remembered she needed to be careful and slowed into a wide-armed shuffle.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy, I hug soft,\u201d she announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cBest hug ever, baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside, the house smelled like unfamiliar laundry detergent.<\/p>\n

The cushions on my sofa had been arranged into a pattern I had never chosen, and my cookbooks had vanished from the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n

Eleanor stood beside the island in a cream cardigan, sorting through what appeared to be our mail.<\/p>\n

\u201cCindy,\u201d she said without smiling. \u201cYou look tired.\u201d<\/p>\n

She turned toward David.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid, help her to the bedroom. She needs rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband guided me down the hallway without meeting my eyes.<\/p>\n

Behind us, Eleanor\u2019s heels moved confidently across my kitchen floor as she opened drawers she had no reason to touch.<\/p>\n

Something tightened inside my chest that had nothing to do with fractured ribs.<\/p>\n

David settled me against the pillows.<\/p>\n

Every rib announced itself with a dull ache.<\/p>\n

Abbie curled beside me holding her stuffed rabbit while Eleanor continued moving purposefully somewhere down the hallway.<\/p>\n

Then I heard it.<\/p>\n

Drawers opening and closing.<\/p>\n

Not kitchen drawers.<\/p>\n

Bedroom drawers.<\/p>\n

\u201cEleanor? David?\u201d I called, carefully shifting my leg. \u201cEverything okay in there?\u201d<\/p>\n

No one replied.<\/p>\n

Only more drawers.<\/p>\n

I stroked Abbie\u2019s hair and tried to keep my voice casual.<\/p>\n

She climbed down obediently.<\/p>\n
