I repaired spreadsheets no one else wanted to handle and corrected reports entire departments quietly abandoned on my desk.<\/p>\n

Many coworkers appreciated what I did.<\/p>\n

My boss, Greg, treated me like entertainment.<\/p>\n

The morning everything changed, he walked into the conference room at eight thirty with coffee in one hand and a folder in the other.<\/p>\n

\u201cMorning, team,\u201d he announced. \u201cBig news today. Company retreat is locked in.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few polite reactions moved around the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cWater park this year,\u201d Greg continued. \u201cNice change from those stuffy hotels, don\u2019t you think?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah shifted uncomfortably two chairs away.<\/p>\n

Even during summer, she wore blazers over her blouses because Greg had once asked whether she was \u201cadvertising for after hours work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSounds fun,\u201d someone offered weakly.<\/p>\n

Greg leaned back and slowly turned his attention toward me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAttendance is mandatory, by the way,\u201d he said. \u201cNo exceptions. Real team players don\u2019t hide, even if they aren\u2019t built for summer events.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room became silent.<\/p>\n

Everyone suddenly found something fascinating inside their notebooks.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight, Linda?\u201d Greg added, tilting his head. \u201cYou\u2019re brave enough to be there, aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

I raised my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be there, Greg.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood,\u201d he replied, stretching the word. \u201cBecause if you can do it, anyone can.\u201d<\/p>\n

One uneasy laugh escaped from the opposite side of the table.<\/p>\n

I recognized the voice but did not look toward it.<\/p>\n

Under the table, Sarah squeezed my wrist once.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a piece of work,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s consistent,\u201d I whispered back. \u201cI\u2019ll give him that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark, seated on my left, muttered something about the years when managers actually managed.<\/p>\n

He had worked at the company longer than anyone else.<\/p>\n

Greg gestured toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be great for you, bud,\u201d Greg said. \u201cDinosaurs need their rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark tightened his jaw but remained silent.<\/p>\n

None of us ever challenged the way Greg treated people.<\/p>\n

The meeting continued, though I barely heard another word.<\/p>\n

My thoughts had already moved elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Three days earlier, I had experienced a conversation that changed everything.<\/p>\n
