Half the company had formed a loose circle around him while he told a story and gestured broadly.<\/p>\n

When he noticed me, his eyebrows rose as though I had performed a miracle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is ridiculous,\u201d he said loudly. \u201cThis is a company event. Whatever complaints anyone has, there\u2019s a process. There\u2019s a chain of command. You don\u2019t hijack a retreat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark returned the microphone to me.<\/p>\n

I lifted it and searched the crowd until I found the person I needed.<\/p>\n

David, the vice president of human resources, stood near the towel station.<\/p>\n

A plastic cup remained frozen halfway to his mouth.<\/p>\n

Every face turned toward him.<\/p>\n

He slowly lowered the cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be a full investigation. Starting Monday. Every person who wants to speak with HR will be heard. Greg, you and I are going to have a conversation before you leave this park today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg\u2019s face changed to a color I had never seen before.<\/p>\n

He opened his mouth, closed it, and attempted a laugh that sounded more like a cough.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreg,\u201d David said quietly. \u201cStop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n

The color drained from Greg\u2019s cheeks.<\/p>\n
