Part 1: Where They Really Went<\/strong><\/h1>\n

For eight years, I believed my father spent every Thursday attending medical appointments, buying groceries and having lunch with our neighbour, Ben.<\/p>\n

I was wrong.<\/p>\n

Ten years earlier, Dad had been diagnosed with glaucoma. By the time doctors discovered it, the damage was severe, and within two years he could see little more than shadows.<\/p>\n

Still, he refused to leave the house where he had lived with my mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hallway still has the dent from when you crashed your bicycle,\u201d he would tell me. \u201cLeaving would feel like losing forty years with her again.\u201d<\/p>\n

I lived nearly a thousand miles away with two children, a demanding career and a busy marriage. Dad could manage most things alone, but he needed transportation for checkups, medication and shopping.<\/p>\n

Ben, his retired neighbour and longtime friend, offered to help.<\/p>\n

Every Thursday, I paid him to drive Dad wherever he needed to go.<\/p>\n

The arrangement gave me peace.<\/p>\n

Dad and I spoke every day. He told me about meals he cooked by touch, terrible audiobooks and checkers games Ben supposedly lost on purpose.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, I heard Ben arriving in the background.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour royal carriage awaits,\u201d he would announce.<\/p>\n

Dad always replied, \u201cIt smells like old coffee and poor decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their laughter made the distance between us feel smaller.<\/p>\n

Then Dad died peacefully in his sleep.<\/p>\n

The funeral passed in a blur. People brought food, shook my hand and told me how proud he had been of me.<\/p>\n

But I kept thinking about our last phone call.<\/p>\n

\u201cThursday was productive,\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n

When I asked what that meant, he laughed and told me not to interrogate an old man. I promised to call him the following day.<\/p>\n

There was no following day.<\/p>\n

After the burial, I remained beside the grave while light rain began to fall.<\/p>\n

Ben approached carrying a sealed envelope with my name written in Dad\u2019s uneven handwriting.<\/p>\n

His hands trembled as he held it out.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father made me promise to tell you where we really went.\u201d<\/p>\n

I assumed he meant casinos, hidden restaurants or some harmless adventure Dad had kept secret because I worried too much.<\/p>\n

Ben shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t only driving him. The places mattered, but what we were doing there mattered more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he told me about Claire.<\/p>\n

Claire was Ben\u2019s only daughter. They had not spoken properly in years. According to Ben, every conversation ended in an argument.<\/p>\n

Dad noticed the way Ben became quiet whenever I mentioned my own children.<\/p>\n

One Thursday, Dad finally asked him what had happened.<\/p>\n

Ben blamed Claire. He said she was stubborn, rarely visited and had built a life that excluded him.<\/p>\n

Dad refused to accept the excuse.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Ben admitted he had spent years making critical remarks about Claire\u2019s career, her marriage and the way she raised her family.<\/p>\n

He claimed he only behaved that way because he missed her.<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s response was blunt.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou miss many things. You miss your daughter, and you missed your chance to make peace with her.\u201d<\/p>\n
