Part 2: Dad\u2019s Secret Project<\/strong><\/h1>\n

At the library, a patient employee taught Ben how to send photographs, record videos and use messages without sounding angry or judgmental.<\/p>\n

Dad sat nearby, listening.<\/p>\n

Whenever Ben complained, Dad reminded him that Claire had spent years learning things to impress her father.<\/p>\n

He could learn something for her.<\/p>\n

The following week, they visited a bakery and bought ingredients for cinnamon rolls\u2014the same treat Ben had made when Claire was a child.<\/p>\n

They practised in Dad\u2019s kitchen.<\/p>\n

The first batch burned.<\/p>\n

The second was raw in the middle.<\/p>\n

Ben blamed the oven.<\/p>\n

Dad blamed the man who had forgotten to set the timer.<\/p>\n

Then came the apologies.<\/p>\n

Ben recorded one in the car. Dad deleted it.<\/p>\n

He tried again over lunch. Dad deleted that version too.<\/p>\n

Finally, Ben demanded to know what Dad expected him to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cStop defending yourself,\u201d Dad told him. \u201cTell her why she matters to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The envelope Ben handed me contained several letters.<\/p>\n

He had read each one aloud to Dad. Dad told him which parts sounded dishonest, which were excuses and which revealed what he truly felt.<\/p>\n

The final letter had no corrections.<\/p>\n

Dad said it was ready.<\/p>\n

Ben still could not deliver it.<\/p>\n

Then Dad gave him one final instruction: after his death, I was supposed to make sure Ben completed what they had started.<\/p>\n

Anger rose inside me.<\/p>\n

I had buried my father less than an hour earlier, and Ben was already giving me another responsibility.<\/p>\n

I pushed the envelope back.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot do this for you today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is another note,\u201d he said. \u201cThat one is for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I opened it because I could not refuse one final message from Dad.<\/p>\n

He wrote that Ben had given him freedom every Thursday without ever making him feel helpless.<\/p>\n

Ben described kerbs, doorways, food and people so Dad always knew what was around him. He waited during appointments but allowed Dad to answer the doctors himself. He offered help without making him feel small.<\/p>\n

Dad explained that helping Ben repair his relationship with Claire was his way of returning that dignity.<\/p>\n

Then I reached the line that broke me.<\/p>\n

You may believe I was hiding something. I was.<\/p>\n

I was hiding how useful I still felt.<\/p>\n

I read it three times.<\/p>\n

Those Thursdays had not only given Dad transportation.<\/p>\n

They had given him purpose.<\/p>\n

He was still advising, teaching and helping someone. Even as his vision disappeared, he had found a way to change another family\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

I looked at Ben.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will go with you,\u201d I said. \u201cBut I will not speak for you. I will only stand beside you, the way you stood beside Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, we drove three hours to Claire\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

Ben rehearsed the apology repeatedly.<\/p>\n

Every version began with regret and ended with an explanation of why he was not entirely responsible.<\/p>\n

Each time, I stopped him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat part is an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the fourth attempt, he looked ready to throw the letter out of the window.<\/p>\n

I locked it in the glove compartment.<\/p>\n

When we reached Claire\u2019s house, she opened the door wearing gardening gloves.<\/p>\n

She had Ben\u2019s eyes and the same stubborn expression.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should have called,\u201d she said coldly.<\/p>\n

Ben almost retreated.<\/p>\n

I stood beside him and whispered Dad\u2019s instruction.<\/p>\n
