Part 3: One Thursday Call<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Ben handed Claire the letter and a box of cinnamon rolls.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spent years protecting my pride,\u201d he said. \u201cI waited for you to return because admitting I hurt you would mean admitting I was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

He swallowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was wrong. More importantly, I made you feel as though you did not matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire did not hug him.<\/p>\n

She did not forgive him.<\/p>\n

For several seconds, she appeared ready to close the door.<\/p>\n

Then she opened the box and smelled the cinnamon rolls.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey may be terrible,\u201d Ben admitted. \u201cHis father refused to finish one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour dad helped him do this?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat makes sense,\u201d she said. \u201cThis old badger would never apologise on his own.\u201d<\/p>\n

She opened the gate.<\/p>\n

We talked on the porch for nearly two hours.<\/p>\n

Ben told her about the library, the bakery, the failed recordings and the afternoons spent rewriting letters in Dad\u2019s kitchen.<\/p>\n

I told her about my daily phone calls with Dad, his awful jokes and the empty chair waiting in his house.<\/p>\n

Talking about him softened my grief.<\/p>\n

Claire eventually brought out a small wooden box filled with unsigned postcards she had received over the previous months.<\/p>\n

One said:<\/p>\n

Your father remembers more than he knows how to say.<\/p>\n

Another read:<\/p>\n

He still makes cinnamon rolls badly.<\/p>\n

A third said:<\/p>\n

Pride takes its toll. I think he is growing tired of it.<\/p>\n

Ben stared at them in disbelief.<\/p>\n

He had not sent them.<\/p>\n

Dad had.<\/p>\n

He had been preparing both sides of the reconciliation.<\/p>\n

Claire held Ben\u2019s letter against her chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot pretend everything is repaired,\u201d she said. \u201cI do not trust you yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do not have to.\u201d<\/p>\n

She considered him for a moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne phone call every Thursday. Start there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the drive home, Ben apologised for continuing to accept my payments after the Thursday trips became personal.<\/p>\n

He explained that Dad insisted I would become suspicious if the arrangement changed.<\/p>\n

Dad had managed both of us until the end.<\/p>\n

The following Thursday, I was still at his house sorting tools and clothes that carried his familiar scent.<\/p>\n

At nine o\u2019clock, Ben\u2019s car appeared outside.<\/p>\n

He had arrived from habit.<\/p>\n

I was waiting on the porch with two coffees.<\/p>\n

\u201cI assume the royal carriage still operates on Thursdays,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Ben looked toward Dad\u2019s empty window.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe carriage feels rather empty now.\u201d<\/p>\n

We decided to drive anyway.<\/p>\n

He passed the library, the bakery and Dad\u2019s clinic.<\/p>\n

Then his phone rang through the car speakers.<\/p>\n

Claire\u2019s name appeared on the dashboard.<\/p>\n

Thursday.<\/p>\n

Exactly as promised.<\/p>\n

Ben reached for the button, then stopped to rehearse his opening.<\/p>\n

I touched his wrist.<\/p>\n

He nodded and answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello, Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice shook.<\/p>\n

For a second, the car felt painfully empty.<\/p>\n

Then Claire replied:<\/p>\n

Ben exhaled as though he had been holding his breath for years.<\/p>\n

I looked toward the passenger seat where my father should have been and unfolded his letter one final time.<\/p>\n

He had spent his last years proving that losing his sight had not made him powerless.<\/p>\n

Every Thursday, he helped a stubborn father find the road back to his daughter.<\/p>\n
