I remained there with my keys in my hand, feeling a quiet warning in my stomach. A complaint from someone like Valerie was unlikely to end with a single conversation.<\/p>\n

Three days later, I was collecting mail at the edge of the gravel driveway when I heard heels grinding against the stones behind me.<\/p>\n

I knew who it was before turning around.<\/p>\n

Valerie had replaced her cup with a designer handbag, but her expression remained unchanged.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to talk about your vehicle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really don\u2019t,\u201d I replied, pulling several envelopes from the mailbox. \u201cIt\u2019s parked on my property.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hideous,\u201d Valerie replied.<\/p>\n

Heat rushed into my face.<\/p>\n

She moved closer until I could smell her perfume, then examined me from head to toe.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me be clear with you, sweetheart. Maybe people like you don\u2019t belong in a neighborhood like this. Normal, wealthy people live here. Not single moms in rusted-out Chevrolets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anger surged through me.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter and I live here now,\u201d I said. \u201cYou\u2019ll have to get used to the view.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She walked away, her heels clicking sharply, while I stood gripping a water bill until my hands finally stopped trembling.<\/p>\n

I did not realize Olivia had overheard us until dinner.<\/p>\n

She quietly moved peas around her plate before looking up at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, why does that lady hate us?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said we don\u2019t belong.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed my fork on the table.<\/p>\n

Olivia was only eight, yet she had already learned to understand the meaning hidden behind adult words.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people think a nice view is more important than being nice,\u201d I told her. \u201cThat\u2019s their problem, not ours.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you looked sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t sad. I was thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olivia chewed slowly. \u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n

That brought a faint smile to her face, and I hoped the matter was finished.<\/p>\n
