Part 2: Why He Had Lied<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Inside the envelope were medical reports, legal papers, property documents and a handwritten letter from Ed.<\/p>\n

The medical records revealed that he had been diagnosed with a serious heart condition eighteen months earlier.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, every cancelled dinner and missed holiday made sense.<\/p>\n

He had not been avoiding us.<\/p>\n

He had been preparing to die.<\/p>\n

In his letter, Ed explained that after receiving the diagnosis, his doctor asked what unfinished responsibilities mattered most to him.<\/p>\n

Ed\u2019s answer was Lily.<\/p>\n

For the next year, he quietly rewrote insurance policies, reorganised trusts and changed beneficiaries. He worked with attorneys to make certain Lily could remain in their home and that nobody could take control of her inheritance.<\/p>\n

He knew our mother would try.<\/p>\n

One sentence stopped me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not marry Lily because I was dying. I married her because I refused to let death decide what happened to her after I was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily sat beside me, crying silently.<\/p>\n

I finally understood why Ed had hidden his illness.<\/p>\n

He knew that if our parents discovered he was dying, Mom would interfere. She would question his decisions, accuse Lily of manipulating him and attempt to control everything before he was gone.<\/p>\n

Ed had spent his final year protecting his wife from his own family.<\/p>\n

I returned to the waiting room with his letter against my chest.<\/p>\n

Mom was already calling someone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need a lawyer here tonight,\u201d she said. \u201cLily cannot manage a house, much less an estate.\u201d<\/p>\n

I told her to put down the phone.<\/p>\n

Then I read Ed\u2019s letter aloud.<\/p>\n

I explained the diagnosis, the legal planning and the safeguards he had created for Lily.<\/p>\n

Mom did not show shame.<\/p>\n

Instead, her face hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe manipulated him,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was dying, and she took advantage of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you know he was sick?\u201d<\/p>\n

She insisted they would have helped if Ed had told them.<\/p>\n

I asked whether either of them had noticed one cardiology appointment, one prescription or one sign that something was wrong.<\/p>\n

Dad finally lowered his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI should have asked more questions,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI believed everything was fine because it was easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he looked at Lily.<\/p>\n

\u201cI failed both of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom became furious with him.<\/p>\n

But I knew the truth.<\/p>\n

Ed had not told them because he knew exactly how they would behave after his death.<\/p>\n

Within one hour, Mom had already proved him right.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were waiting to take everything from Lily,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am your mother,\u201d she snapped. \u201cDo not speak to me like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Lily is my sister,\u201d I replied. \u201cEd made sure of that. If anyone challenges his wishes, they will have to go through me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom threatened to take the matter to court.<\/p>\n

I told her I would be there.<\/p>\n

But I would not be standing beside her.<\/p>\n
