PART 1: THE APARTMENT THAT SAVED US<\/strong><\/h1>\n

When my marriage ended, I was thirty-one years old with a four-year-old daughter, $1,100 in my bank account, and a car that only started if I turned the key twice.<\/p>\n

That was everything I still owned.<\/p>\n

My daughter, Trixie, was too young to understand why her father had left or why we were packing our lives into cardboard boxes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we going somewhere fun?\u201d she asked, holding up a purple sweater.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going somewhere new,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill Daddy come?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot today, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

She accepted the answer and placed the sweater inside the box. I turned away before she could see me cry.<\/p>\n

I worked part-time at a dental office, but my income barely covered groceries. Most apartments required deposits, credit checks, references and proof of income I could not provide. Some landlords stopped responding the moment I mentioned I had a child.<\/p>\n

Then I found a handwritten notice taped inside a grocery-store window.<\/p>\n

**GARAGE APARTMENT FOR RENT. PALMER STREET. $800. ASK FOR ALVAREZ.**<\/p>\n

The apartment was behind an old blue house.<\/p>\n

It had one bedroom, a tiny kitchen and a floor that tilted near the bathroom. The refrigerator buzzed constantly, and the window above the sink looked out over a row of tomato plants.<\/p>\n

To me, it looked like safety.<\/p>\n

Trixie ran into the bedroom.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I put stars on the ceiling?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat means no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

She opened the closet and frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s small.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo are your clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n

That made her laugh.<\/p>\n

Mr. Alvarez met us in the driveway. He was in his seventies, wore a grey work shirt and had a face that revealed almost nothing.<\/p>\n

He looked at me, then at Trixie, then at my unreliable car.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you smoke?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have a dog?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs the little girl yours?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cEight hundred a month. First of the month. No lease. I don\u2019t like paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly cried.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs there a deposit?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cApplication fee?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you need proof of income?\u201d<\/p>\n

He stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you pay eight hundred?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen move in Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was all.<\/p>\n

We arrived with six boxes, two suitcases and a mattress my sister had given us. Trixie slept in the bedroom while I slept on a narrow sofa in the living room.<\/p>\n

The first night, rain hit the roof so loudly that she came out carrying her blanket.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

I lifted the blanket.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome here.\u201d<\/p>\n

She curled against me.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you like our new house?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked around the tiny room.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I will.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI like the tomatoes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not ours.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can still look at them.\u201d<\/p>\n

That became our life.<\/p>\n

I worked mornings at the dental office and evening shifts at a bakery three nights a week. I used coupons, patched my shoes and learned which bills could be delayed.<\/p>\n

But the rent was always paid first.<\/p>\n

On the first day of each month, I wrote Mr. Alvarez a cheque and slid it beneath his back door.<\/p>\n

He never gave me a receipt.<\/p>\n

I never asked.<\/p>\n

He mostly kept to himself, but he quietly repaired things before I could complain. He fixed a loose step, left oranges outside our door and pretended they had simply appeared because his tree had produced too many.<\/p>\n

Then, three months after we moved in, I noticed something strange.<\/p>\n

My rent cheque had never cleared.<\/p>\n

The $800 was still sitting in my account.<\/p>\n

I immediately knocked on his door.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you misplaced my cheque,\u201d I said. \u201cI can write another one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Alvarez looked at me for a long moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s handled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he closed the door.<\/p>\n

December passed.<\/p>\n

The next cheque remained untouched.<\/p>\n

So did January\u2019s.<\/p>\n

And February\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Every month, I wrote another cheque.<\/p>\n

Every month, the money stayed in my account.<\/p>\n

Whenever I asked him about it, he gave me the same answer.<\/p>\n
