For eleven years, I paid every bill on Briar Lane without receiving a single dollar from my ex-husband, Mark.<\/p>\n

The house had belonged to my family for sixty-three years. My grandmother planted the roses, my grandfather built the porch swing, and my mother raised me beneath its ageing roof. Before she died, I promised that no bank would ever place a foreclosure sign in the garden.<\/p>\n

Then I became ill.<\/p>\n

The surgery saved me, but the medical bills nearly destroyed everything else. At forty-six, I was drowning in debt, and two weeks later, a foreclosure notice appeared on my front door.<\/p>\n

My daughter, Jenna, knew I was struggling, but she did not understand how serious the situation had become. I had hidden the truth because I feared she would pressure me to sell. She had already begun saying that Briar Lane demanded too much from me.<\/p>\n

I was still standing outside with the notice in my hand when Victor Hale arrived.<\/p>\n

Victor owned a company that restored historic buildings. His late wife had worked with my mother through the local historical society, so we knew each other slightly.<\/p>\n

He studied the notice, then said, \u201cClaire, we need to talk before Mark causes more damage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside, Victor showed me a series of messages Mark had sent him.<\/p>\n

Mark described me as unstable, emotional and incapable of making sensible financial decisions. He knew Victor wanted access to land beside my property for a historic hotel project. Mark offered to help him obtain Briar Lane.<\/p>\n

His plan was simple.<\/p>\n

Victor would frighten me with the possibility of foreclosure, gain my trust and persuade me to sign over financial authority or sell the house. Mark even suggested that Victor court or marry me if necessary.<\/p>\n

In return, Mark wanted a consulting fee and a share of the development deal.<\/p>\n

One message read:<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is emotional about that house. Do not challenge the emotion. Use it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victor refused to participate, but he had his own problem. A clause in his late wife\u2019s family trust required him to remarry within five years of her death. Otherwise, control of a preservation foundation would pass to his brother-in-law, who intended to shut down its restoration programme.<\/p>\n

Victor needed a temporary wife.<\/p>\n

I needed to stop the foreclosure.<\/p>\n

It was probably the least romantic proposal in history, but it was honest.<\/p>\n

We agreed to a one-year marriage with separate finances and separate property. A prenuptial agreement guaranteed that Briar Lane would remain mine. Victor would pay the overdue mortgage balance of $38,400 as a gift, not a loan, and he would receive no authority over my money or property.<\/p>\n

I insisted on using my own lawyer and demanded copies of every message Mark had sent.<\/p>\n

Victor agreed.<\/p>\n

A week later, we married at the courthouse. The ceremony lasted twelve minutes.<\/p>\n

The contract took seven days.<\/p>\n

That difference mattered.<\/p>\n
