I believed he imagined it too.<\/p>\n

Because of the way he lingered on our porch.<\/p>\n

Because he laughed at Rosie\u2019s jokes that usually only I understood.<\/p>\n

Then one Sunday, when I was twenty-two, Ben knocked on our door.<\/p>\n

A small velvet box rested in his palm.<\/p>\n

My heart rose so quickly I nearly felt dizzy.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I talk to Rosie?\u201d he asked me.<\/p>\n

I stared at him. \u201cRosie?\u201d<\/p>\n

Without answering, I stepped aside.<\/p>\n

From the kitchen window, I watched him kneel in front of my sister between the tomato plants.<\/p>\n

I saw her hands fly to her mouth.<\/p>\n

I watched her nod so hard that her curls bounced.<\/p>\n

That night, I cried into my pillow so no one would hear.<\/p>\n

Terrible thoughts raced through my mind, thoughts that made me ashamed of myself.<\/p>\n

Ben could not possibly find her more attractive than me.<\/p>\n

He had to have another reason for marrying her.<\/p>\n

Looking back, it hurts to know how close I came to the truth.<\/p>\n

The following morning, I smiled and helped Rosie create a wedding inspiration board on Pinterest.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll be my maid of honor,\u201d she told me. \u201cPromise me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Part of me kept expecting our parents to interfere.<\/p>\n

Instead, they smiled and said Ben would take good care of Rosie.<\/p>\n

The wedding was small.<\/p>\n

Ben wore a gray suit and cried when Rosie walked down the aisle.<\/p>\n

My parents continued smiling.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou chose well,\u201d Dad said to Ben, patting his shoulder.<\/p>\n

The comment hurt.<\/p>\n

I watched Ben slide the ring onto Rosie\u2019s finger.<\/p>\n

And I wondered whether I had ever truly known my best friend.<\/p>\n

Three years passed.<\/p>\n

Eventually, I moved beyond my hurt feelings and met a wonderful man.<\/p>\n

Rosie and Ben moved into a small yellow house near the edge of town.<\/p>\n

Every morning at nine, Rosie called to tell me what she was wearing.<\/p>\n

Then came the call I had always prayed for.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to be a mom,\u201d Rosie whispered. \u201cWe\u2019re having twins.\u201d<\/p>\n

I dropped onto the floor of my apartment, crying and laughing together.<\/p>\n

All her life, people had claimed Rosie would never have a normal future.<\/p>\n

Now she was going to become a mother.<\/p>\n

I should have known happiness that enormous would not arrive alone.<\/p>\n

The pregnancy became difficult.<\/p>\n

At thirty-four weeks, Rosie was rushed to the hospital.<\/p>\n

The doctors gave us a grim prognosis.<\/p>\n

The waiting room clock moved past midnight.<\/p>\n

I stared at the double doors through which they had taken Rosie, willing them to open with good news.<\/p>\n

Ben sat beside me, one knee bouncing uncontrollably.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s going to be okay,\u201d I whispered, more for myself than for him. \u201cRosie is strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben pressed both palms over his eyes.<\/p>\n

A sound escaped him, somewhere between a prayer and a sob.<\/p>\n

Then a doctor came through the double doors.<\/p>\n

Ben jumped to his feet.<\/p>\n

The doctor\u2019s expression told me everything before he spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s lost a lot of blood. We\u2019ve stabilized the babies, but Rosie is crashing. We\u2019re doing everything we can, but you need to prepare yourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

He vanished behind the doors again.<\/p>\n

Ben stood motionless, swaying slightly.<\/p>\n

I placed a hand against his back.<\/p>\n

My best friend.<\/p>\n

My brother.<\/p>\n

\u201cBen, look at me. Rosie chose you because you make her feel safe. Give her that same strength now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy promise,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

Before I could ask what he meant, he turned toward me.<\/p>\n

Something unfamiliar filled his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to talk to you,\u201d he said. \u201cAway from here.\u201d<\/p>\n

He guided me down the corridor to a small alcove near the stairs.<\/p>\n
