For a second, I wondered if I had heard her correctly.<\/p>\n

My daughter, Sabina, was four. She rested against my shoulder in a damp cotton nightdress, her cheeks unnaturally red and her dark curls stuck to her forehead. Her small hands hung weakly against my collarbone. Every few moments, a tremor passed through her body even though heat radiated from her skin. I had wrapped her in the soft gray blanket she used for naps, the one with faded stars around the edge, and it had already grown warm from her fever.<\/p>\n

Downstairs, the house glowed with light.<\/p>\n

Soft jazz drifted through the marble hallway from speakers hidden beside the living room columns. Glasses clinked. Someone laughed in the dining room with the polished, careful laugh people use when they want to sound wealthy. Caterers carried trays beneath the chandelier, while the scent of lemon butter, roasted asparagus, and costly perfume filled the rooms as though nothing could possibly be wrong.<\/p>\n

But everything was wrong.<\/p>\n

Sabina\u2019s lips were dry. Her eyelids kept sinking shut. When I tried to help her drink from the small cup in her medical bag, she swallowed once, then turned her face against my neck.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy,\u201d she whispered, barely louder than air, \u201cI\u2019m so tired.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those words sent a chill through me that had nothing to do with her fever.<\/p>\n

I grabbed my keys from the console and headed for the front door. I did not change clothes. I did not check my appearance. I told the kitchen staff only, \u201cMy daughter is sick. I\u2019m leaving.\u201d A young server in a black vest looked at Sabina and immediately stepped aside, his professional party expression replaced by genuine concern.<\/p>\n

I reached the middle of the hallway before Beatrix blocked my path.<\/p>\n

My mother-in-law wore a dark wine-colored silk gown, pearls around her neck, and a diamond bracelet on one wrist. Her silver hair was arranged in a flawless twist. She looked like the sort of woman magazines photographed beside grand fireplaces. She never looked at Sabina. Not once. Her gaze moved from my flats to my sweater and then to the blanket in my arms, as though I had carried a domestic inconvenience into her evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere exactly do you think you\u2019re going?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo urgent care,\u201d I said. \u201cHer fever is too high.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beatrix glanced toward the dining room. \u201cGuests are arriving in twenty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are supposed to be supervising the kitchen. Thatcher\u2019s uncle is bringing investors tonight. People who matter. This is not the time for one of your emotional scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

Someone in the living room praised the flower arrangements. White roses stood in tall glass vases on every table, their petals open beneath the warm lights. I had paid for those flowers. I had approved the bill. I had selected the florist because Beatrix insisted that only a \u201ccertain level\u201d of guest would notice if the arrangements looked ordinary.<\/p>\n

Sabina shifted against me and made a faint sound.<\/p>\n

\u201cMove, Beatrix.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyebrows rose. She was not accustomed to hearing her name from me without a please or an apology attached.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a fever, Vivian. Give her medicine and let her sleep. Children get fevers. They do not require the entire household to lose its dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe needs medical care.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe needs a mother who understands proportion.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that moment, the study door opened.<\/p>\n

Thatcher stepped into the hall while adjusting a cufflink, his tuxedo jacket sitting perfectly on his shoulders. My husband was handsome in the polished way men from old families were trained to be: straight posture, controlled movements, and a smile he could activate in any room. He looked at me, then at the blanket in my arms, and for one brief second I waited for him to become Sabina\u2019s father before becoming Beatrix\u2019s son.<\/p>\n

He did not.<\/p>\n

\u201cVivian,\u201d he said, already sounding tired. \u201cNot tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
