Exactly at 6:30, I heard Bob lift his car keys from the hook beside the door.<\/p>\n

He walked into the dining room with his coat already in his hands. He barely noticed the dinner I\u2019d prepared before slipping it on.<\/p>\n

\u201cUncle John\u2019s cat is stuck in a tree,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t help laughing.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis cat,\u201d I repeated. \u201cTonight? On our anniversary night, Bob?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s panicking, Penelope. You know how he gets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how he gets Bob! I\u2019ve never met him! In seven years of marriage, I\u2019ve never met him!\u201d<\/p>\n

Bob calmly buttoned his coat as though I hadn\u2019t spoken.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell him to call the fire department,\u201d I said. \u201cThat\u2019s what fire departments are for. Bob, look at me!\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband looked at me with the same detached expression someone gives a chair they\u2019re about to move aside.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t realize you were so heartless,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Then he walked out.<\/p>\n

The door closed quietly behind him, almost gently, and somehow that hurt more than if he had slammed it.<\/p>\n

I lowered myself into the chair at the table I had spent hours preparing.<\/p>\n

I stared at the empty seat across from me until candle wax dripped onto the tablecloth.<\/p>\n

Something inside me finally broke.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t remember choosing to go upstairs.<\/p>\n

The next thing I knew, I was standing in the guest room, pulling open the drawer where Bob kept his old address book with family phone numbers.<\/p>\n

My hands shook as I flipped through pages of aunts, uncles, and cousins.<\/p>\n

Then I found it.<\/p>\n

Uncle John\u2019s landline, written in Bob\u2019s handwriting years earlier.<\/p>\n

I dialed.<\/p>\n

After four rings, an older woman answered, sounding warm and slightly out of breath, as though she\u2019d hurried to the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi. Um. My name is Penelope. You know Bob? I\u2019m his wife. I\u2019m sorry to call so late, but I need you to please tell Uncle John that Bob has his own family and\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

I stopped talking and forced myself to breathe.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, dear. You said you\u2019re Bob\u2019s wife?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I replied. \u201cJohn\u2019s nephew. He is sister Marie\u2019s son.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence lasted even longer.<\/p>\n

For a moment I wondered if the call had disconnected.<\/p>\n

Finally the woman spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cSweetheart,\u201d she said gently. \u201cMy name is Sylvia. I was John\u2019s wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWas?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHoney,\u201d Aunt Sylvia answered softly, \u201cJohn died 10 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

A sound escaped my throat before I could stop it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you sure you haven\u2019t mixed something up?\u201d she asked kindly. \u201cMaybe there\u2019s another John in the family?\u201d<\/p>\n

My entire body turned cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I whispered. \u201cIt\u2019s Bob\u2019s mother\u2019s brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s my John,\u201d Aunt Sylvia said. \u201cAnd honey, I haven\u2019t heard from Bob in years. Not since before the funeral. He hasn\u2019t come here.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat heavily on the edge of the guest bed because my legs suddenly refused to hold me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAunt Sylvia,\u201d I whispered, \u201cAre you telling me that for three years, every single night, when my husband said he was going to help Uncle John, he was lying?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know where he\u2019s been going,\u201d she replied quietly. \u201cBut it isn\u2019t to my home.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t even remember ending the call.<\/p>\n

Every excuse built on the name of a man who had been gone for a decade.<\/p>\n

Bob paused while slipping off his coat.<\/p>\n

Then the familiar smile returned.<\/p>\n

I lowered my eyes to the book so he wouldn\u2019t see my expression.<\/p>\n

A dog.<\/p>\n

When he left, it had been a cat stuck in a tree.<\/p>\n

He had become so comfortable lying that he couldn\u2019t even remember which story he had invented.<\/p>\n

That was all the proof I needed.<\/p>\n

Whatever waited for him every evening at 6:30, it certainly wasn\u2019t Uncle John.<\/p>\n
