Across the front were promises of independence, comfort, and a perfect place to begin the next chapter.<\/p>\n

The kitchen smelled of fresh coffee, furniture polish, and the chicken soup simmering on the stove. I had started it before breakfast because Daniel\u2019s youngest child had a cold.<\/p>\n

For one strange moment, my attention stayed on the soup.<\/p>\n

The carrots needed another ten minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe needs reminders,\u201d Vanessa continued. \u201cShe leaves things in the kitchen. She interrupts the children\u2019s routines. She keeps insisting on doing work that no one asked her to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced toward the soup, the neatly folded laundry beside the pantry, and the school permission slip I had signed that morning because neither parent remembered it was due.<\/p>\n
