I knew she claimed cinnamon belonged in coffee only because Harold loved it.<\/p>\n

I knew she always read the final page of every mystery novel before the first.<\/p>\n

I knew she saved the pie crust until the very last bite.<\/p>\n

By law, I was simply the neighbor next door.<\/p>\n

After the burial, Olive led the children toward the car while I remained beside Theresa\u2019s grave, staring at a small bouquet of sunflowers.<\/p>\n

A man in a dark suit walked over.<\/p>\n

A worn brass key slipped into my palm.<\/p>\n

Its edges were smooth from years of use, warmed by my hand.<\/p>\n

Fanny leaned in.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it for Miss Theresa\u2019s house?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I unfolded the letter.<\/p>\n

Two pages were covered in Theresa\u2019s familiar handwriting.<\/p>\n

The opening sentence nearly stole my breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re holding this, my porch is finally quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced toward her house.<\/p>\n

For eight years, those windows had never been dark on a Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

I continued reading.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t be angry that I left without saying goodbye. At my age, goodbyes become greedy things. They ask for words that people cannot say without breaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olive quietly sat across from me.<\/p>\n

Roger rested his chin on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, before you decide this key means I left you my house, let me save you the trouble. I did not.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed despite the tears.<\/p>\n

That was exactly how Theresa would have said it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe house will go to my family. The furniture will be divided. Mr. Thorne has instructions for the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned the page.<\/p>\n
