My name is Harold. I am eighty-five years old, and three months ago, I buried Margaret, the woman I had loved for nearly six decades.<\/p>\n

For fifty-eight years, she was the first person I saw each morning and the last person I spoke to at night. Even when we disagreed, we never went to sleep without saying good night.<\/p>\n

After she died, silence filled every room of our house.<\/p>\n

Her slippers remained beside the bed. Her blue cardigan still hung over the chair. Some mornings, I reached toward her side of the mattress before remembering she was gone.<\/p>\n

I thought the funeral would be the hardest part.<\/p>\n

I was wrong.<\/p>\n

Our three adult children arrived early. Graham, our eldest son, greeted relatives at the entrance. Phoebe arranged the flowers, while Julian repeatedly asked whether I needed water.<\/p>\n

To everyone watching, they looked like devoted children.<\/p>\n

But when they thought no one was paying attention, I heard them talking beside Margaret\u2019s coffin.<\/p>\n

They were not sharing memories.<\/p>\n

After the service, neighbours and relatives returned to our home. They brought food, coffee and stories about Margaret. For a few hours, her laughter seemed to return through their memories.<\/p>\n

A few days later, Julian walked through my living room as though he were inspecting property.<\/p>\n

\u201cSelling now might be easier for everyone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

None of them asked whether I was sleeping or eating.<\/p>\n

They only wanted to know what would happen to my belongings.<\/p>\n

That night, I sat in Margaret\u2019s chair and looked at an old photograph of us in our twenties. Her hair was blowing across her face while I stood with one arm around her waist.<\/p>\n

Margaret had always teased me about my love of beautiful cars.<\/p>\n

Whenever an elegant classic car passed us, I slowed down to admire it.<\/p>\n

My children heard about the purchase before the car was even delivered.<\/p>\n

That Saturday, all three of them stormed into my house.<\/p>\n

Phoebe was crying. Graham called me irresponsible. Julian demanded to know whether I had lost my mind.<\/p>\n

Then he shouted the words that changed everything.<\/p>\n
