PART 2: WHAT THEY DID BESIDE THEIR MOTHER\u2019S COFFIN<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I walked to a cabinet and removed the one object I had brought home from Margaret\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n

Then I placed it on the table.<\/p>\n

It was her pearl bracelet.<\/p>\n

Phoebe immediately stopped crying.<\/p>\n

Graham stared at it without moving, while Julian stepped backwards.<\/p>\n

I had given Margaret the bracelet on our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. She wore it to graduations, weddings and every Christmas dinner after that.<\/p>\n

She had also been wearing it inside her coffin.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least she was wearing it when I arrived,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Phoebe\u2019s face lost its colour.<\/p>\n

Graham quickly insisted that the situation was not what I thought.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen explain what I think,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

No one answered.<\/p>\n

I reminded them that I had seen them standing beside their mother\u2019s coffin. I had heard them deciding who should receive her jewellery before the service had even ended.<\/p>\n

I heard one of them say the bracelet was worth more than the ring.<\/p>\n

I heard another say no one would notice if it disappeared.<\/p>\n

Phoebe began crying again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told them it was wrong,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told them to wait until the room was empty.\u201d<\/p>\n

She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n

That detail had stayed with me more than anything else.<\/p>\n

It was not only their greed. It was the calm way they had spoken, as though Margaret had already stopped being a person.<\/p>\n

They had reduced her entire life to jewellery, furniture and money.<\/p>\n

Julian tried to argue that they had never planned to steal anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought the jewellery would belong to us eventually,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n

There it was again.<\/p>\n

They believed everything Margaret and I owned already belonged to them.<\/p>\n

I told them about the sacrifices their mother had made. She went without new clothes so they could have school supplies. She worked additional hours to cover tuition fees. She even sold a brooch inherited from her own mother when one of them needed help with a deposit.<\/p>\n

They stared at me in shock.<\/p>\n

Margaret had never told them because she did not want praise.<\/p>\n

She simply wanted her children to be safe.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know,\u201d Phoebe whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never asked,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

For the first time, their anger began to disappear.<\/p>\n

Julian admitted they had been afraid after Margaret\u2019s death. She had always held the family together, and at the funeral, I had appeared weak and lost.<\/p>\n

Graham gave a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we talked about money because we didn\u2019t want to talk about our feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was the first honest statement any of them had made.<\/p>\n

Phoebe said she believed handling the house and the will would give her a sense of control.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told myself I was being practical,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPractical people ask whether their father has eaten.\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

None of them tried to defend themselves after that.<\/p>\n

I picked up Margaret\u2019s bracelet and turned it over. Inside the clasp were four engraved words:<\/p>\n

\u201cYoung and reckless again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaret had added them years after I gave it to her.<\/p>\n

My throat tightened.<\/p>\n

Graham looked at the bracelet.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the car was revenge?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first, perhaps,\u201d I admitted.<\/p>\n

I had wanted to frighten them. I wanted them to feel what it was like to lose money they had already claimed.<\/p>\n

But the trips were different.<\/p>\n

I truly intended to take them.<\/p>\n

Phoebe stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlone?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI may be alone,\u201d I said, \u201cbut I am still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words surprised all of us.<\/p>\n

They surprised me most.<\/p>\n

For three months, I had behaved as though my life had ended with Margaret\u2019s. I stopped cooking, ignored friends and sat in her chair waiting for another day to pass.<\/p>\n

Buying the car began as anger.<\/p>\n

But while choosing destinations, I remembered something important.<\/p>\n

Margaret had not spent fifty-eight years loving me so I could spend my remaining years waiting to die.<\/p>\n

Then Graham asked the question they were all afraid to ask.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI changed my will.\u201d<\/p>\n

They immediately went still.<\/p>\n

I told them they would each receive something, but far less than they had expected.<\/p>\n

Most of what remained would go to causes Margaret supported: a scholarship fund, a hospice and a shelter for women rebuilding their lives.<\/p>\n

Phoebe nodded through tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe would like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cShe would.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was not trying to punish my children forever.<\/p>\n

But I would not reward them for treating me like a bank account.<\/p>\n
