\u201cWhat do you want from us?\u201d<\/p>\n

It was the first time any of them had asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want honesty,\u201d I replied. \u201cI want you to visit because I am your father, not because you are measuring the furniture. I want you to remember your mother was a person before she became an inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phoebe reached across the table and took my hand.<\/p>\n

For a moment, I nearly pulled away.<\/p>\n

Then I let her hold it.<\/p>\n

No one mentioned the cost.<\/p>\n

But when the engine came to life, I understood that reckless did not always mean careless.<\/p>\n
