The document was titled Household Financial Authorization. My full name was already printed across the top, along with my bank\u2019s name, the last four digits of my checking account, and an estimate of my savings balance.<\/p>\n

The figures were close.<\/p>\n

Not exact.<\/p>\n

That somehow made everything worse.<\/p>\n

Near the bottom, Brenda had been designated as the person responsible for \u201croutine household purchasing, emergency financial coordination, and family budget oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n

David appeared as the primary account administrator.<\/p>\n

I was simply listed as the income holder.<\/p>\n

For several seconds, the only sound in the apartment was the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere did you get these numbers?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brenda calmly folded her hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid and I have been planning responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was not my question.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou work at a bank, Rachel. You understand that marriage requires transparency.\u201d<\/p>\n

She kept her expression steady, though her eyes turned noticeably colder.<\/p>\n

\u201cI raised David alone after his father passed. I have managed every important part of his life for thirty years. That will not suddenly stop because you put on a white dress.\u201d<\/p>\n

I slipped the paperwork back into the envelope.<\/p>\n

Brenda pushed her chair back.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are entering this family with a very comfortable salary, substantial savings, and a habit of treating every dollar as if it exists only for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt does exist for me. I earned it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her lips tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere. That attitude. That is exactly what I have been warning David about.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood up.<\/p>\n

The marriage-license folder on the chair suddenly seemed impossible to ignore. Inside were our identification copies, birth certificates, courthouse appointment confirmation, and the handwritten vows I had revised late into the night.<\/p>\n

Brenda placed one hand over the folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not finished.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n

David walked into the room wearing dark slacks and a white dress shirt, his tie still hanging loose. His eyes moved from me to his mother before settling on the envelope.<\/p>\n

Brenda interrupted, her voice rising.<\/p>\n
