I picked up my coat.<\/p>\n

Brenda let out a short laugh of disbelief.<\/p>\n

David remained frozen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI said I am not marrying you.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression went blank.<\/p>\n

\u201cRachel, you\u2019re upset.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot cancel our wedding because of one form.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not one form.\u201d<\/p>\n

I held up the envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the guest list you changed after I approved it. It is the money you transferred without asking. It is the dress appointment your mother tried to cancel. It is the apartment key you gave her. It is every private conversation you repeated to her. And now it is my bank account.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brenda placed a hand against her chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew you would do this. I knew you would humiliate him the moment you did not get complete control.\u201d<\/p>\n

I met her gaze.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have confused boundaries with control for so long that you no longer recognize the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

David stepped between us.<\/p>\n

\u201cStop. Both of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word came out harsher than I had ever heard from him.<\/p>\n

I stopped for a moment.<\/p>\n

He looked surprised by his own tone, but he did not take it back.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are not walking out five minutes before we leave for the courthouse,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have guests arriving tomorrow. Vendors are paid. My entire family knows.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat does not change my answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

He reached for the marriage-license folder.<\/p>\n

I picked it up before he could.<\/p>\n

Brenda stepped toward the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will sit down,\u201d she said, \u201cand we will resolve this like adults.\u201d<\/p>\n

I slipped on my coat.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdults do not demand another adult\u2019s banking password.\u201d<\/p>\n

I walked past David and into the hallway.<\/p>\n

He hurried after me.<\/p>\n

\u201cRachel.\u201d<\/p>\n

I continued toward the stairwell.<\/p>\n

\u201cRachel, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pushed through the heavy fire door and stepped onto the stairwell landing. Concrete steps spiraled toward the lobby below while pale daylight streamed through a narrow window, stretching across the painted cinder-block walls.<\/p>\n

David reached me before the door swung shut.<\/p>\n

He stepped directly into my path.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are making a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I am ending one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do not get to embarrass my mother and then disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n

His hand wrapped around my forearm.<\/p>\n

Not hard enough to bruise.<\/p>\n

Just firmly enough to make it clear he believed I wasn\u2019t free to leave.<\/p>\n

Everything suddenly felt silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cRelease me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to calm down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am calm. Let go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brenda appeared in the doorway above us.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not let her leave like this,\u201d she called. \u201cShe will call everyone and make us look terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

David\u2019s grip tightened.<\/p>\n

I looked straight at the security camera mounted high in the corner of the landing.<\/p>\n

Then I raised my voice just enough to be heard.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid Mercer, I have told you twice to release my arm. The building camera is recording us.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes flicked toward the camera.<\/p>\n

He immediately let go.<\/p>\n

At that moment, the second-floor door opened, and an older man carrying a laundry basket stepped onto the landing. He paused when he saw us.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou all right?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I replied. \u201cI am leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n

David lowered his voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cRachel, please. Come back inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

I walked around him.<\/p>\n

He instinctively reached toward me again but stopped when he noticed the neighbor watching.<\/p>\n

His hand dropped to his side.<\/p>\n

I continued down the stairs.<\/p>\n

Behind me, Brenda called after me with the offended certainty of someone who had never imagined being ignored.<\/p>\n

I kept walking.<\/p>\n

By the time I stepped onto the sidewalk, my hands were trembling.<\/p>\n

I stood beneath the apartment awning while cold air drifted between the neighboring brick buildings. Cars rolled through the intersection. A city bus stopped on the corner. Across the street, someone carried a paper coffee cup and a bouquet of yellow flowers.<\/p>\n

Life carried on as though nothing had happened.<\/p>\n

My phone lit up.<\/p>\n

David.<\/p>\n

I declined the call.<\/p>\n

It rang again.<\/p>\n

Then Brenda called.<\/p>\n

I blocked both numbers before requesting a ride home.<\/p>\n
