PART 2: THE MISTAKE I COULD NEVER ERASE<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I placed the dusty box between us.<\/p>\n

Leo\u2019s sarcastic expression disappeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe greatest mistake of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside were old photographs, letters, a basketball ticket and a handmade friendship bracelet.<\/p>\n

Leo picked up a picture of my teenage self standing beside a smiling boy in a bright blue shirt.<\/p>\n

The boy had Down syndrome.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHis name was Daniel. He was my best friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

I met Daniel when I was sixteen. He had transferred to our school during sophomore year. Most students were not openly cruel to him. They simply ignored him and behaved as though he did not exist.<\/p>\n

Daniel never treated anyone that way.<\/p>\n

He remembered birthdays, greeted the school janitor by name and asked teachers about their weekends. He also remembered my favourite sweets and brought them to me whenever he could.<\/p>\n

At the time, my father had recently died.<\/p>\n

I barely spoke, slept or smiled. My friends did not know how to deal with my grief, so most of them slowly disappeared.<\/p>\n

Daniel stayed.<\/p>\n

Every day, he sat beside me during lunch. He shared his sandwiches and told terrible jokes until I laughed.<\/p>\n

He never demanded that I stop being sad.<\/p>\n

He simply refused to let me be sad alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe saved me,\u201d I told Leo.<\/p>\n

My son stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened to him?\u201d<\/p>\n

I picked up the friendship bracelet Daniel had spent two weeks making for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe popular students made fun of us for being friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

They mocked Daniel\u2019s voice and laughed when he answered questions in class. Usually, he ignored them or pretended not to notice.<\/p>\n

One Friday afternoon, I was standing with a group of popular girls in the school car park. Daniel saw me and began walking toward us.<\/p>\n

The girls started laughing.<\/p>\n

They called him my boyfriend and made cruel jokes about how our future children might speak.<\/p>\n

I knew I should defend him.<\/p>\n

I should have told them to stop.<\/p>\n

Instead, I laughed with them.<\/p>\n

It was not loud. It lasted only a few seconds.<\/p>\n

But Daniel heard it.<\/p>\n

His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

He looked directly at me\u2014not with anger, but with pain. Then he turned around and walked away.<\/p>\n

I never forgot how small his shoulders seemed as he left.<\/p>\n

Daniel was absent from school the following Monday.<\/p>\n

He did not return on Tuesday or Wednesday either.<\/p>\n

Eventually, the principal told us that his mother had accepted a job in another state. They had moved away over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Daniel was gone before I had the chance to apologise.<\/p>\n

I unfolded a yellowed letter and gave it to Leo.<\/p>\n

Daniel had written it after the incident.<\/p>\n

He thanked me for being his friend, said I had made school better and hoped I would smile often.<\/p>\n

Even after I betrayed him, he still called me his friend.<\/p>\n

Leo read the letter twice.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t hate you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would have been easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears filled my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have spent twenty years wishing I could undo those few seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo wiped his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was only joking about Sam.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo were those girls,\u201d I replied. \u201cThey probably went home and forgot everything. Daniel did not forget. Neither did I.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo lowered his head.<\/p>\n

Then he began to cry.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. Neither did I.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

But then he shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I\u2019m sorry for Sam. I saw his face, and I still kept going.\u201d<\/p>\n

I reached across the table and held his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people who are easiest to mock are often the ones working hardest to make everyone else feel welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot erase what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. But can we go back tomorrow? I need to apologise.\u201d<\/p>\n
