PART 3: LEARNING TO SEE PEOPLE DIFFERENTLY<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The following afternoon, we returned to the steakhouse.<\/p>\n

Sam recognised us immediately. For a brief moment, uncertainty crossed his face before he offered a polite smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo walked directly toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not here to eat. I came because I owe you an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n

The restaurant seemed to grow quieter.<\/p>\n

Leo took a deep breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I did yesterday was cruel. You did nothing to deserve it. I laughed at someone who was working harder than I was, and I\u2019m ashamed of myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sam studied him silently.<\/p>\n

Then he smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, it wasn\u2019t. I am truly sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sam reached out his hand, and Leo shook it.<\/p>\n

Leo\u2019s eyes filled with tears again.<\/p>\n

\u201cCould we start over?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sam\u2019s smile widened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, Leo asked whether he could volunteer at a local recreation programme for teenagers and young adults with developmental disabilities.<\/p>\n

After his first Saturday there, he returned home completely exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey beat me at basketball,\u201d he announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery game?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery single one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they cheered for me anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

The boy who had once laughed at someone for being different had finally learned to see people differently.<\/p>\n

The old wooden box still remains in the back of my closet, but I no longer need to open it.<\/p>\n

For years, I believed my mistake with Daniel was nothing more than a painful memory I would carry forever.<\/p>\n

Now I understand that regret can serve a purpose when we use it to teach someone else what we learned too late.<\/p>\n

A careless joke may last only a few seconds for the person who makes it, but the person receiving it may remember the humiliation for years.<\/p>\n

Kindness works the same way.<\/p>\n

A small act of patience, respect or acceptance may seem insignificant to us, yet it can completely change someone else\u2019s day\u2014or even their life.<\/p>\n

Sometimes our greatest failures become the most important lessons we pass on.<\/p>\n
