Part 2: The Secret at the Funeral<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Two years passed after the divorce.<\/p>\n

Troy and I saw each other only occasionally\u2014at our children\u2019s birthdays, family gatherings, or by chance at the grocery store. We were always polite, but distant.<\/p>\n

He never explained the hotel rooms.<\/p>\n

He never told me where the money had gone.<\/p>\n

And although no other woman ever appeared, the unanswered questions stayed with me.<\/p>\n

Then one afternoon, our daughter called from the hospital.<\/p>\n

Troy had died suddenly.<\/p>\n

For several seconds, I couldn\u2019t speak.<\/p>\n

We were no longer married, but he had still been part of almost my entire life. I had known him since childhood. We had raised children together. We had shared decades of memories before everything fell apart.<\/p>\n

I attended the funeral, though I wasn\u2019t sure where I belonged.<\/p>\n

My entire body went still.<\/p>\n

He shook his head slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no other woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him, waiting for an explanation.<\/p>\n

Frank gripped my arm as though he needed help standing.<\/p>\n

\u201cTroy told me the truth near the end,\u201d he whispered. \u201cHe made me promise not to tell you until it couldn\u2019t change anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause he believed knowing would hurt you more than losing him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could ask another question, my son appeared and guided Frank toward a chair.<\/p>\n

But as he walked away, Frank turned back.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome secrets aren\u2019t affairs,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd some lies don\u2019t come from wanting another life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words followed me home.<\/p>\n

That night, I sat at the same kitchen table where I had once placed the hotel receipts in front of Troy.<\/p>\n

For the first time, I wondered whether I had misunderstood everything.<\/p>\n

Three days later, a courier delivered an envelope.<\/p>\n
