I sat at a caf\u00e9 inside the airport, opened my laptop, and called Marcus Vance, my late father\u2019s former business partner. Marcus was a senior corporate attorney who had known me since childhood and had always treated me like family.<\/p>\n

Three years earlier, Julian had forged my signature on a joint credit application. I had forgiven him publicly, but privately, I had stopped trusting him with anything involving money.<\/p>\n

So when he recently asked me to sign documents placing my premarital property under his company, I had taken precautions.<\/p>\n

Before returning the papers, I created a revocable property trust protecting the house and attached a legal condition to my signature. Any transaction above ten thousand dollars required separate confirmation from me.<\/p>\n

Julian had been too confident to read the final pages.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe plans to transfer the house and my savings into his company this afternoon,\u201d I told Marcus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere does the confirmation request go?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo my private email. And it requires two-factor authentication.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcus gave a quiet laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe thinks he built a trap,\u201d he said. \u201cBut he has no idea what he signed.\u201d<\/p>\n

I instructed him to contact the bank, freeze any suspicious transfers, and begin a forensic review of Julian\u2019s company accounts.<\/p>\n

Then I closed my laptop and drove home.<\/p>\n

At four o\u2019clock, I entered the house and found Julian sitting in the living room with a glass of scotch. His leather briefcase was open on the coffee table.<\/p>\n

Julian explained that placing the property under his company would supposedly protect us from market risks. Then he removed a new transfer deed from his briefcase and placed a silver pen beside it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I need is your signature,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I looked down at the document.<\/p>\n

Beneath Julian\u2019s name was another name: Sarah Sterling, listed as senior vice president and co-owner.<\/p>\n

The brunette from the airport.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t remember you mentioning Sarah,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Julian\u2019s body stiffened.<\/p>\n
