Daniel copied the video onto a flash drive, repeatedly wiping his palms against his trousers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said. \u201cWe should have found it sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou found it,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

He watched me as though he expected shouting, threats, or a lawsuit before lunchtime.<\/p>\n

All of those reactions existed inside me, waiting like matches near gasoline.<\/p>\n

But something colder moved first.<\/p>\n

It was the part of me that had spent thirty-one years building a construction company from nothing. The part that understood anger was only useful after the foundation had been prepared.<\/p>\n

\u201cWas anyone else in that hallway?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Not that we\u2019ve found.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid my son or his wife ask about the cameras?\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes shifted slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Vale\u2014Cassandra\u2014asked one of our attendants whether the private wing had recording equipment. The attendant told her only the public corridors did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that corridor was public.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

I slipped the drive into my pocket.<\/p>\n

When I returned home, Ellen was sitting in the living room beneath a blanket, pretending to read.<\/p>\n

She had not turned the page in at least ten minutes.<\/p>\n

I remained in the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

She lowered the book.<\/p>\n

For one second, relief crossed her face.<\/p>\n

Then shame replaced it.<\/p>\n

That nearly broke me more than the footage.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t want me there,\u201d Ellen said. \u201cCassandra said mothers like me make weddings look cheap. She said I hovered, that I was embarrassing Michael in front of her family.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat beside her.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Michael?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled with tears, though none fell.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me I always made everything about myself. I told him I only wanted to give him the cufflinks your father wore at our wedding. Cassandra said heirlooms from dead working men didn\u2019t belong in photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n

My father had spent his life laying bricks until arthritis twisted his fingers.<\/p>\n

The cufflinks were simple silver squares.<\/p>\n

Ellen polished them every Christmas because she believed love survived through small things that were carefully maintained.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said I was still his mother,\u201d she continued. \u201cThat was when he grabbed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room became silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018Not tonight.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked toward the bruising on her arm.<\/p>\n

I laughed once without humor.<\/p>\n

Instead, I opened the safe in my office and removed an envelope Michael had asked about three months earlier.<\/p>\n

It contained the down-payment gift Ellen and I had planned to give him after the honeymoon.<\/p>\n

One hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n

Enough to help him and Cassandra purchase a house in the Main Line neighborhood she wanted.<\/p>\n

Beside it sat another folder.<\/p>\n

Michael\u2019s employment agreement.<\/p>\n

He worked as a project manager in my company because I had created a position for him.<\/p>\n

He received a salary he had not earned, authority he was not prepared to carry, and a future he assumed already belonged to him.<\/p>\n

I placed both folders on my desk.<\/p>\n

At 8:05 the following morning, I called our attorney, Margaret Ellis.<\/p>\n
