I had just finished rinsing my coffee cup when the doorbell echoed through the quiet house. My husband, Daniel, was supposedly away on a week-long business trip, so I was not expecting anyone.<\/p>\n

When I opened the door, a deliveryman stood behind an enormous wall of golden flowers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmber?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bouquet was so heavy that I had to grip it with both arms. The roses were flawless, their petals glowing beneath the afternoon light.<\/p>\n

Daniel knew I loved white roses.<\/p>\n

I had carried white roses at our wedding. He bought them after my mother died. They decorated our table on our fifteenth anniversary.<\/p>\n

One rose had a tiny red stain hidden beneath a petal.<\/p>\n

I thought it was a natural flaw until I found another.<\/p>\n

Then a third.<\/p>\n

Exactly three roses had been secretly marked in red.<\/p>\n

My hands began to shake.<\/p>\n

I had seen that pattern before.<\/p>\n

Years earlier, my father, a homicide detective, had mentioned an unsolved case involving flowers. He never shared every detail, but I remembered him sitting on our porch late one night, staring into the darkness.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome monsters don\u2019t leave fingerprints,\u201d he had said. \u201cThey leave symbols.\u201d<\/p>\n

I grabbed my phone.<\/p>\n

This time, I called the police.<\/p>\n

The dispatcher asked whether I was in immediate danger.<\/p>\n

Kellan looked directly at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwenty-two years ago, three women vanished. Before each disappearance, the victim received exactly one hundred yellow roses.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the red marks?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThree marked flowers every time.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach turned.<\/p>\n

Kellan explained that my father believed the number represented completion\u2014a final cycle, a final goodbye.<\/p>\n
