When he ended the call, his face was grim.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel was never sent on a business trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo flight was booked. The hotel reservation was false. His company hasn\u2019t seen him for four days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Four days earlier, Daniel had kissed my forehead, picked up his suitcase, and told me he would call from Chicago.<\/p>\n

Now I had no idea where he was.<\/p>\n

Or why he had lied.<\/p>\n

That evening, police searched every room while I sat downstairs wrapped in a blanket. I listened to drawers opening, footsteps crossing the ceiling, and officers speaking quietly behind closed doors.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Kellan returned carrying a small metal box from Daniel\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Inside were old newspaper articles.<\/p>\n

Dozens of them.<\/p>\n

Every clipping concerned the three women who had disappeared twenty-two years earlier.<\/p>\n

Photographs of the victims.<\/p>\n

Reports about the yellow roses.<\/p>\n

Investigators\u2019 theories.<\/p>\n

There were handwritten notes along the margins.<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n

My chest tightened as I remembered the man I had loved for eighteen years\u2014the man who cooked terrible pancakes every Sunday, who remembered my favourite coffee creamer, and who held me through my father\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n

I did not sleep.<\/p>\n

The following morning, Detective Kellan returned with forensic results from the florist order.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fingerprints are not Daniel\u2019s,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Relief and confusion collided inside me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen whose are they?\u201d<\/p>\n

Kellan hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey belong to Amos.\u201d<\/p>\n

I did not recognise the name.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a detective,\u201d Kellan continued. \u201cHe worked the original case with your father.\u201d<\/p>\n

My father\u2019s former partner.<\/p>\n

Kellan sat across from me and lowered his voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father suspected Amos before he died, but he never found enough evidence to arrest him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would Amos send flowers to me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t believe they were intended as a threat against you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what were they?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBait.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kellan explained that Daniel had somehow obtained my father\u2019s old investigation notes. He must have been secretly examining the case and getting close to proving Amos was responsible.<\/p>\n

The false business trip had likely been Daniel\u2019s attempt to investigate without placing me in danger.<\/p>\n

Amos had discovered what he was doing.<\/p>\n

The bouquet was designed to frighten me, confuse the police, and make Daniel appear connected to the original crimes.<\/p>\n

The newspaper clippings had not been trophies.<\/p>\n

They were evidence Daniel had been studying.<\/p>\n

I covered my face.<\/p>\n

I had spent an entire night wondering whether my husband was a murderer.<\/p>\n

In reality, he might have disappeared because he was trying to expose one.<\/p>\n

Police traced Amos to an abandoned hunting cabin outside the city.<\/p>\n

I was taken to the station and told to remain there while officers searched the property.<\/p>\n

Every minute felt endless.<\/p>\n

I sat beneath the fluorescent lights holding Daniel\u2019s wedding ring. He had left it on the dresser before leaving, probably because he feared it might identify him if Amos caught him.<\/p>\n

Hours later, Detective Kellan entered the room.<\/p>\n

His eyes were wet.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

I jumped to my feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sound that left me was part sob and part prayer.<\/p>\n

Daniel returned home two days later with bruises across his face and a bandage around one wrist.<\/p>\n

The moment he stepped through the doorway, I ran into his arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought you were dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

He held me tightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Amber.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained that he had discovered my father\u2019s notes while clearing boxes from the attic. The documents suggested Amos had manipulated evidence during the original investigation.<\/p>\n

Daniel believed he could quietly gather proof before anyone realised what he was doing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should have told me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n
