Living under the same roof as my son and his difficult wife was nothing like the peaceful family arrangement I had imagined. Then their unfriendly neighbour unexpectedly invited me to dinner, and my entire life began moving in a direction I never saw coming.<\/p>\n

I had been staying with my son, Andrew, and his wife, Kate, for two weeks.<\/p>\n

Neither of them had been thrilled about the arrangement. Kate had resisted the idea for years, but after I injured my leg\u2014or perhaps made the injury appear slightly worse than it really was\u2014she could no longer refuse.<\/p>\n

One autumn morning, I stepped onto the porch and noticed Kate struggling to rake leaves in the front yard.<\/p>\n

The poor woman clearly had no idea what she was doing.<\/p>\n

\u201cKate, you\u2019re doing it incorrectly!\u201d I called.<\/p>\n

She continued raking without looking at me, so I moved closer, adding a small limp for effect.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should make several small piles first,\u201d I explained. \u201cThen combine them into one larger pile. Dragging leaves across the entire yard only creates more work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kate stopped and leaned against the rake.<\/p>\n

She was seven months pregnant, and exhaustion was written across her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought your leg was hurting,\u201d she said, glancing suspiciously at the way I was standing. \u201cPerhaps you\u2019re well enough to return to your own house.\u201d<\/p>\n

I immediately placed a hand against my leg.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to help you despite the pain, and that is how you respond?\u201d<\/p>\n

She rested one hand protectively over her stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cHelping would mean doing something useful instead of supervising me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her tone was as cold as the autumn air.<\/p>\n

I considered responding, but decided she was not worth the argument.<\/p>\n

At that moment, their neighbour appeared on the other side of the fence.<\/p>\n

Mr Davis was an older man with a permanent frown and the personality of a locked door.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood afternoon, Mr Davis!\u201d I called brightly.<\/p>\n

He muttered something I could not understand and disappeared into his house without even acknowledging me.<\/p>\n

I decided he and Kate were perfectly suited to the same neighbourhood. Both were rude, antisocial and seemingly determined to make everyone around them miserable.<\/p>\n

When I returned inside, I noticed another layer of dust on the furniture.<\/p>\n

Kate was already on maternity leave. Surely she could find a few minutes to clean properly. Andrew worked hard and deserved to return to a tidy house.<\/p>\n

Later, Kate began preparing dinner.<\/p>\n

Naturally, I offered several suggestions, but she ignored every one of them. Eventually, she turned around and spoke through clenched teeth.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease leave the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n

That evening, Andrew came home and I overheard Kate complaining to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe already discussed this,\u201d he said calmly. \u201cIt will be better for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d Kate answered with a tired sigh. \u201cI\u2019m trying, but it\u2019s more difficult than you realise.\u201d<\/p>\n

When I glanced around the corner, Andrew had his arms around her. He was comforting her as though she were the injured party.<\/p>\n

At dinner, I pointed out that Kate\u2019s pie was slightly undercooked.<\/p>\n

Instead of thanking me for the observation, she smiled in a way that made me suspicious.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have an idea,\u201d she said. \u201cWhy don\u2019t you bake a pie yourself and take it to Mr Davis?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat miserable man?\u201d I replied. \u201cHe cannot even manage a polite greeting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you\u2019ve misunderstood him. He\u2019s probably just shy,\u201d Kate said. \u201cBesides, I\u2019ve noticed the way he looks at you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n
