Kate looked toward Andrew, and he squeezed her hand as though the two of them were sharing a private joke.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I was surprised to see Mr Davis walking toward the yard.<\/p>\n

\u201cMargaret,\u201d he began awkwardly, \u201cwould you consider having dinner with me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor you, it is Miss Miller,\u201d I corrected him.<\/p>\n

His expression tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well, Miss Miller. May I invite you to dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will permit it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave a short nod and started walking away.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that your entire invitation?\u201d I called after him. \u201cYou have not told me when or where.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stopped without turning around.<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight. Seven o\u2019clock. My house.\u201d<\/p>\n

I spent the rest of the day preparing.<\/p>\n

At exactly seven, I stood outside his door with my heart beating more quickly than I cared to admit.<\/p>\n

When he opened it, he looked just as severe as usual.<\/p>\n

Inside, he pointed toward a chair without pulling it out for me. Clearly, gentlemanly behaviour was not one of his strengths.<\/p>\n

Dinner began awkwardly. Our conversation was stiff and filled with uncomfortable pauses until I mentioned that I loved jazz.<\/p>\n

His entire face changed.<\/p>\n

For the first time, the gloomy neighbour disappeared, replaced by someone almost youthful.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would play my favourite record for you,\u201d he said. \u201cI might even invite you to dance, but my record player stopped working.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do not need music to dance,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

The words surprised both of us.<\/p>\n

Mr Davis stood and extended his hand.<\/p>\n

I accepted it.<\/p>\n

We moved slowly across the room while he hummed an old melody I had not heard in years. The dim light, the familiar tune and the warmth of another person beside me softened something inside my heart.<\/p>\n

For the first time in a very long while, I did not feel lonely.<\/p>\n

When the evening ended, I told him I should return home.<\/p>\n

He walked me to the door, then hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can call me Peter,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you may call me Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could step outside, he leaned closer.<\/p>\n

For a moment, I froze.<\/p>\n

Then his lips gently touched mine.<\/p>\n

The kiss was hesitant and brief, but it awakened emotions I had thought were long gone.<\/p>\n

When he pulled away, he studied my expression carefully.<\/p>\n

I simply smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood night, Peter.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cool air touched my warm cheeks as I crossed the yard, but the smile remained on my face long after I returned home.<\/p>\n

After that evening, Peter became part of my everyday life.<\/p>\n

We read books from his enormous collection, experimented with new recipes and laughed over neighbourhood gossip. While I cooked, he hummed my favourite songs.<\/p>\n

His home, once silent and gloomy, gradually filled with warmth.<\/p>\n

I discovered a happiness I had not felt in years.<\/p>\n

Even Kate\u2019s sharp remarks stopped bothering me. I had Peter now, and my attention was no longer focused entirely on my son\u2019s household.<\/p>\n

On Thanksgiving, I invited Peter to dinner because I did not want him spending the holiday alone.<\/p>\n

At some point, I noticed him quietly entering the kitchen to speak with Kate.<\/p>\n

Curious, I followed them.<\/p>\n

\u201cKate, I wanted to ask about the record player,\u201d Peter said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve already ordered it,\u201d she replied. \u201cIt should arrive soon. You have no idea how grateful I am. You\u2019ve made my life much easier. I honestly don\u2019t know how you tolerate her, but the record player will be yours soon. Thank you for agreeing to this entire performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n

Her words struck me like a slap.<\/p>\n

A performance?<\/p>\n

A record player?<\/p>\n

Tolerating me?<\/p>\n

\u201cSo this has all been a game?\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n

Kate spun around, her face turning pale.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWould someone care to explain?\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew hurried into the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour wife created some sort of scheme against me!\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew released a long sigh.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was not only Kate\u2019s idea, Mom. I was involved too. We thought you and Mr Davis might make one another happy, but neither of you would have made the first move. So we gave him some encouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEncouragement?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe offered him a new record player in exchange for taking you on several dates.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kate looked at him in disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cAndrew, why would you tell her like that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least my son is finally being honest with me,\u201d I snapped.<\/p>\n

Kate\u2019s patience broke.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour son was just as desperate as I was! You criticised everything I did. You interfered in our marriage, our home and every small decision I made. I am pregnant, exhausted and constantly stressed. We needed you to focus on something other than us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her words hurt because part of me knew they were true.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe plan worked,\u201d she continued. \u201cYou were happy and occupied, and I finally had room to breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward Peter.<\/p>\n
