PART 1 \u2014 DEAN\u2019S<\/strong> TREE<\/h1>\n

My husband planted our apple tree twelve years ago, only a few months before he passed away.<\/p>\n

Dean had already been ill for some time, although neither of us liked admitting how serious it had become. Even when carrying a bag of soil left him breathless, he remained determined to plant the young sapling himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the best place,\u201d he said, pointing toward a sunny corner of the garden.<\/p>\n

I reminded him that his doctor had forbidden heavy lifting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a tree, Sloane,\u201d he replied with a grin. \u201cNot a weightlifting competition.\u201d<\/p>\n

We planted it together. In truth, I did most of the digging while Dean sat nearby, offering instructions. When we finished, he placed one hand against the thin trunk.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive it time,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019ll surprise you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dean died four months later.<\/p>\n

For two years, the tree produced nothing. I nearly had it removed because looking at it brought back too much pain. Then one spring, it finally bloomed.<\/p>\n

The following autumn, it produced twelve apples.<\/p>\n

I counted every one.<\/p>\n

As the years passed, the tree grew stronger. Soon, it produced enough fruit for pies, cider, applesauce, neighbours and children who came knocking to ask if they could pick one.<\/p>\n

I always said yes.<\/p>\n

The tree became part of the neighbourhood, but to me, it remained one of the last living things Dean had touched.<\/p>\n

Then Ryan moved into the house next door.<\/p>\n

Within weeks, he replaced his mailbox, removed every flower from his front garden and covered the ground with white stones. One afternoon, he knocked on my door and immediately pointed toward my backyard.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to discuss your tree.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe apple tree?\u201d I asked. \u201cIt\u2019s beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s messy,\u201d he replied. \u201cIts branches cross the fence, and fruit falls into my garden.\u201d<\/p>\n

I offered to trim the branches and collect anything that dropped onto his property.<\/p>\n

Ryan shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want it trimmed. I want it removed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

He began lecturing me about property values, insects and appearances. I reminded him that the tree stood entirely on my land.<\/p>\n

His expression hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou may not like what happens next.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following day, I hired someone to cut back every branch that crossed the fence. Nothing from the tree would fall into Ryan\u2019s garden again.<\/p>\n

That should have ended the disagreement.<\/p>\n

Instead, Ryan continued complaining.<\/p>\n

He claimed the roots would damage his foundation. He said the apples attracted rodents. Eventually, he filed a formal complaint with the homeowners\u2019 association.<\/p>\n

Mira, the association representative, inspected the tree and found no violation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tree is on Sloane\u2019s property,\u201d she told Ryan. \u201cYou are not allowed to damage it.\u201d<\/p>\n

After that, Ryan stopped speaking to me.<\/p>\n

But he continued watching.<\/p>\n

Whenever I worked outside, I could feel his eyes following me from his kitchen window.<\/p>\n

That was why I quietly installed a trail camera behind a hedge, facing the tree and the garden gate.<\/p>\n

I hoped I would never need it.<\/p>\n

Three weeks later, I woke to find hundreds of apples scattered across my lawn.<\/p>\n

Nearly every fruit had been ripped from the tree. Several smaller branches were broken, and the soil beneath them had been torn apart.<\/p>\n

I was not crying over apples.<\/p>\n

Someone had entered my property and deliberately damaged the tree Dean had planted.<\/p>\n

Ryan appeared on his porch holding a cup of coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you do this?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He looked at the ruined fruit and smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cMust have been a strong wind.\u201d<\/p>\n

There had been no wind.<\/p>\n

He was waiting for me to shout, cry or lose control.<\/p>\n

Instead, I smiled back.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt must have been.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I went inside and opened the trail-camera footage.<\/p>\n
