PART 2 \u2014 THE STRONG WIND<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The recording showed everything.<\/p>\n

At 12:47 in the morning, Ryan climbed over my fence carrying a fruit picker and two buckets.<\/p>\n

He stripped apples from the branches, shook the smaller limbs and climbed into the tree when some fruit would not come loose. Several branches snapped beneath his weight.<\/p>\n

Then he carried the apples to my front garden and dumped them across the grass.<\/p>\n

He made six trips.<\/p>\n

During the final trip, he stopped directly in front of the hidden camera to catch his breath.<\/p>\n

His face was perfectly visible.<\/p>\n

I watched the video twice.<\/p>\n

Then I began planning.<\/p>\n

I collected every apple that remained whole and left the damaged branches untouched. At two in the morning, I carried paper tags, string, gloves, a wheelbarrow and a large sign into my garden.<\/p>\n

For the next three hours, I attached a numbered tag to each usable apple.<\/p>\n

Every tag read:<\/p>\n

\u201cRemoved from Sloane\u2019s tree without permission.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were 245 apples.<\/p>\n

I carried them carefully to Ryan\u2019s garden and arranged them in perfect rows. I did not throw them, damage his plants or touch his house.<\/p>\n

In the centre of the display, I placed a sign:<\/p>\n

\u201cStrong wind appears to blow both ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I returned home and made coffee.<\/p>\n

Ryan discovered the apples at sunrise.<\/p>\n

His shouting woke half the street.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d he yelled.<\/p>\n

I stepped onto my porch.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wind must have been especially strong last night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did this!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no idea what you mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m reporting you to the homeowners\u2019 association.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGo ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had walked directly into the trap.<\/p>\n

Mira arrived twenty minutes later. Ryan rushed toward her, claiming that I had covered his property with rubbish.<\/p>\n

She examined the numbered rows and read the sign.<\/p>\n

\u201cSloane, did you place these here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I answered. \u201cI also have video showing how they were removed from my tree and scattered across my garden.\u201d<\/p>\n

The colour disappeared from Ryan\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

Mira turned toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you enter her property?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

I held up my phone and played the recording.<\/p>\n

The video showed Ryan climbing the fence, filling the buckets, breaking branches and dumping the fruit.<\/p>\n

When it ended, the street fell silent.<\/p>\n

Ryan claimed the branches had crossed onto his property.<\/p>\n

The footage clearly showed that he had entered mine.<\/p>\n

Then he accused me of editing the video.<\/p>\n

Mira\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou had no right to enter her garden, damage her tree or remove the fruit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan pointed toward the apples on his lawn.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd she had the right to do this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlacing items on another person\u2019s property is not advisable,\u201d Mira said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll remove them,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter they have been documented,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

By then, several neighbours had gathered nearby.<\/p>\n

Mrs Patel from across the road stared at Ryan.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou climbed into her garden in the middle of the night?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan ignored her.<\/p>\n

Mira took out her phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d he demanded.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalling the police.\u201d<\/p>\n

His confidence vanished.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat isn\u2019t necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou trespassed and damaged private property.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was only a tree.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was not your tree.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the officers arrived, Ryan changed his story several times. First, he said the apples had fallen naturally. Then he claimed he had entered my garden to clean them up. Finally, he insisted I had given him permission.<\/p>\n

The video disproved every version.<\/p>\n

An arborist inspected the tree later that day. Two branches had suffered serious damage, but the tree would survive.<\/p>\n

Ryan was fined, ordered to pay the repair costs and assigned community service.<\/p>\n

The judge appeared to have a sense of humour.<\/p>\n

Ryan was sent to help maintain the public orchard in the town park.<\/p>\n

For several Saturdays, he picked apples, cleared leaves and removed fallen fruit from the paths.<\/p>\n

The first time I drove past and saw him carrying a basket, I laughed so hard that I had to pull over.<\/p>\n
